Man, I love shooting pigeons!

Had a chance to get out and shoot tonight so I headed to a farm close by. When I arrived I saw a small flock of pigeons circling the silos. The farm hands were working by them so I walked to the other end of the property and lo and behold, there was a pigeon sitting on a grain bin about 20 yards away. One shot offhand from my Veteran. 22 dropped him on the spot.

After a bit the farmhands drove off and I saw the pigeons come in for a landing. One flew right into the opening and the other one landed on top giving me a 50 yard shot. I rested my gun on a fence post and took the shot, dropping him onto the roof below. The last pigeon came circling around and flew right into the opening like the other one did with no chance for a shot. I waited around about a half hour and shot a couple starlings and sparrows but no more pigeons. I climbed up on a fence and retrieved the dead pigeon off the roof so he could pose for the camera with his buddy.

The action died there so I went to another farm about 5 miles away. Right off I saw pigeons flying around so I parked and got ready. It wasn't long before a couple landed on a bin and I shot the white one at 30 yards. They just kept circling and landing on one bin or another. I shot one at 75 yards and he flew off crashing into a bean field about 150 yards away. Then another one landed right above me giving me a 20 yard shot. After about a half hour I spotted one on top of the silo at 50 yards and dropped him into the cattle pen. I picked up those two and went out and found the one in the field plus a starling I shot.

The farmer told me he had groundhogs to get rid of but I hadn't seen any in the four times I went there. I walked farther out away from the buildings towards a woods and spotted one sitting on and old Bush hog. He whistled and jumped into his hole but now I know where they are so I'll set up on him next time.

I'm really loving my Veteran and it is just plain awesome with the SWFA 10x42 scope on top. I just got in my Scope-werks turret and software program so that's next on my list to get working.

Nice shooting. I was in Alma yesterday fishing. Wish I had the pistol or rifle instead of a fishing pole. Pigeons were roosted up under the bridges big time. Then they would fly down to the edge of the river and land on the sand bars. Perfect shooting situation. Except it was within city limits. Some of my best memories were shooting pigeons with my .20 Sheridan when I was a kid. They were considered “big game”! We had hog farms and birds were thick. Dang, that was a long time ago. But I still feel like a kid when I see a flock circling around an old barn.

Awesome randy !

My Veteran long is my favorite gun by far...have you tried any slugs?

Mine Is a laser beam with VK 24 grainers at 865 fps and shoots the 22.5s pretty well also.

James from Michigan,

I bought some of the 22 gr VK's and only shot a handful to see how they shot. If I remember correctly they were shooting right at 875 fps and they were ok at 50 yards but not spectacular. Really haven't had time to dial them in but the way this gun shoots with 18 JSB I probably will just keep using the pellets. I hate to mess up a good thing.
