Making those long(er) kills

The squirrels at my buddy’s neighborhood last spring were so abundant most my kills were 30-40 yards and holdover was reserved for the longer shots. Way more to whet my excitement for this new activity. On the longer shots we’d typically not use the maximum magnification to see the pellet strike and then re-aim. This winter I invested in a rangefinder, chronograph and Strelok. All right I am now extending my ranges and am excited with 80 yard first shot hits.

After missing the shots I used to make I’m racking my brain... my regulator broke, my scope mounts have moved, my booger hook has lost it’s mojo...

Come to find out my zero I did in the winter was what I was still using. Thanks to ballistics 101 with professor Bob O, I learned just how much the weather effects trajectory.

I fell back in love with my rifle, I wasn’t just back in the game, I was back to the giddy grinning idiot that was me last spring except routinely making kills around 100 yards with no problem. Which is a good thing because I think we thinned out the heard nearby. Those 40 yard holes apparently didn’t get re infested. But out around 100, they don’t even notice you... till it’s too late. I even got a blind last summer in order to get closer because my long shots were severely lacking.

I thought this crap was fun last year, now this whole other chapter opens up that makes it feel new all over again.

Happy hunting everyone.

Wish I had prairie dog towns in The East.

I have reoccurring dreams about that.

We have rats in the cities why can’t we have prairie dogs in the fields?

Boy can you imagine the farmers would go nuts . Lots of groundhogs but safe shooting is the problem. Air rifles can work and help with that. I got two with the air rifle last year

I think what Haga was trying to say was he got frustrated at some stage in his shooting. But now that he has learned what to do, he has gotten himself past the obstacle and shooting is fun again.

I remember when I first started, I thought 35yds was a long shot. Then 50, then 75. Now I purposely start out the day making 100+ yd shots and then just take the remainder of the shots as they come.
