Lost Newbie

The model 48 recoils just like any springer. Actually it's the 54 or 56 that have the sledge system to absorb recoil. The action still moves in the stock with the recoil though and those two are notorious scope killers. The 34 is less powerful and therefore milder (more fun) to shoot. The really powerful springers are kind of harsh shooting and difficult to shoot accurately. There is a reason guys detune their springers-it's to make them easier to shoot and therefore more enjoyable.

Thanks for the correction JohnL57. And for the insight saltlake58.

This is part of my problem.... everytime i feel like i am leaning to one type (spring, breaker, pcp) and make model i read more and fall back to ground zero. I think this is why i havent purchased one yet!
oh no it was the gauntlet wait, i just gave up after a while.
i was thinking about a 34 after reading owners say its a gun for a lifetime. That would make this purchase really worth it. Compared to if i bought lets say a gauntlet and yong heng compressor, etc. that technology might not hold its value to long at all and who knows the life expectancy of them either.
seems so difficult. I might just have to start buying multiple guns just to see what i like!

Steve, ultimately, that’s what will happen #multiple guns. The Sport/Hobbie is tons of fun and very addictive, it will suck you in.
So, it is Very wise to hear what the vast majority is saying, not which model is THE best one, but you will see a trend. Springers are harder to shoot, but you learn how to shoot very well, they teach you patience and technique. If worried about the kick, hold, etc. Get an HW30. Stay away from the cheaper models like Gamo, they won’t last and you will have to replace without being able to sell the first purchase.
PCP: it would be good if you can shoot with a friend and check them out. Yes, you will need air, there are different ways to achieve this. I use an Altaros booster and it does just fine for me. The PCP game is expensive, having air is more important thathe gun. If you want accuracy and quiet, it will cost you more than what you think it will, so like most say here: Buy once and be done.
Ask yourself what you want to do with the gun and answer some of the important questions and go from there.
Wait till this week and see what comes up in the classifieds, lots of new guns coming out this week, people will be selling very good, hardly used rifles for less.

The 34 is a great gun.I had one a few years ago and loved it. Loaned it to someone and they moved outta town and took it with them #*%#^^%! Anyway when they say kick its not like a powder burner its just a little hold sensitive. I would reccomend a .22cal for better accuract at longer distance (20-50) yards. The 48 is more power, to much for 177cal imo. It launches pellets to fast, might be better in 22cal. I own the 48 and 2 FX pcps now and love all 3. RWS makes quality guns.

"Saltysteve"I might just buy a diana 34 and see what it feels like. Im not worried about the kick but more like how long it will take to learn. If i have to put in to much effort just starting something new it really sucks the fun out.
i havent heard to many replies on barrel breaks here. Is that because of the accuracy with that type?
Do a little reading on the “Springers” section. There are good threads with accuracy reports and pictures of different rifles. See what you see.

Comment about break barrels, springers or whatever we call them, compared to a PCP recoil
Springers can shoot extremely well, we have many excellent springer shooters here. I have two and can't shoot either worth a darn. My opinion of a springer is that you must start with a good power plant and have a good trigger to shoot well. Having never shot a Diana, I can't speak to that brand, but . . . .

The physics of a PCS are simple. Pull trigger, blast of air pushes pellet out of barrel. Recoil is one direction, back into your shoulder just like any normal gun.

Break Barrel is different. When you pull the trigger, the spring or gas ram pushes the piston forward, pushing the gun back into your shoulder. This is the normal part of the recoil cycle. When the piston hits the front of the chamber and stops, the recoil reverses and pulls the gun out away from your shoulder. To counteract this, look up and use the "Artillery Hold". Basically, you hold the gun loosely and let it recoil as it desires.

A good gun, such as the Diana will minimize impacts of the second recoil. Unfortunately, my guns are not the higher quality. I got rid of one Ruger (Made by Umerex) that literally shuddered when you fired it. was just unnerving, so sold it for a song. By the way, Umerex (https://www.umarexusa.com/) makes many "Brands" of air gun including Browning, Ruger, Winchester, Berretta, Walther, Colt, Hammerli, RWS, Smith & Wesson, and others. Basically, if it isn't a Crosman, Diana, or a couple other brands, it's probably an Umerex. If it's at Walmart, it's probably an Umerex.

Break Barrels may (most do not, but it is a risk) suffer from Barrel Droop. This is where over time, the barrel no longer returns to the proper position after cocking. You can adjust optics to compensate, but wear and tear on these are different from PCP's. PCP's tanks (the carbon fiber bulk air tanks) must be recertified every 5 years, and if you use pumps, you'll need to rebuild every few years as the O-rings will wear.

Break Barrel guns and PCP's can both shoot well. The real problem is that both are good starter choices. I personally am firmly in the PCP camp, while others love the Break Barrels. I saw one post above that this is just the first step of a hobby that will suck you in and just figure this is your first of a long line of guns. Yup, gotta agree wth that one. Critical point here is to make a decision and "pull the trigger" and get shooting.

Good luck!

May I suggest you just get a 34, shoot the neck out of it! Start at closer ranges, try different pellets. Have fun, don't over think it. Try different ways of holding the gun and go with what seems to work. If after 6 months you aren't happy, put it up for sale on the classifieds. At least you'll have gotten some real world experience to build on.

I've had several sringers. RWS 36 .22, Beeman (Theoben) Crow Magnum lV .20 and my present Beeman (Webley) Kodiak .25.
They are all outstanding for the investment versus fun to shoot factor.
I traded off the RWS when I picked up the Kodiak.
The Crow Magnum was more of an investment piece, as it was far too gorgeous for field use for me.
Sold it to an Alaskan pipeline worker.
Looking at going PCP... Daystate, FX and RAW have caught my eye.

Try a Google search on these questions. Most of the info is already out there. The R7 = HW30, the R9 I think it's the HW95. Some differences in styling etc.

What I was trying to say before is that you may or may not get everything you want at that price range. A lot depends on what you will do with it. The HW30 should fit the bill just fine. Accurate, German quality, and not loud at all. Look at the used model being sold at AoA. It's just under $400 and comes with everything you need. It should surpass all of your above mentioned requirements. It comes scoped and has moderator. (Before someone else takes it)

The HW30 is the same gun as the Beeman R7- The HW30 has a plainer stock and open sights, the R7 has a checkered stock and a muzzle brake (NOT a moderator, just a weight) Both are sweet shooting accurate guns, but not particularly powerful.

The HW95 is the same gun as the Beeman R9. The HW95 has a plainer stock and open sights, the R9 has a checkered stock and a muzzle brake (NOT a moderator, just a weight) Both are powerful enough to hunt with, and a nice balance of power to weight. They are comparable power and weight wise to the RWS/Diana 34, but have a bit better build quality.

Thanks JohnL57!

i wish thus forum had a "like" button because theres alot of you guys writing up good posts and id like to thank you all.

i really thinking i should just buy 2 guns at this point.
Diana 34, hw30/50/95 (one of these)
and a
gauntlet because i cant wait weeks , months for the new fortitude.

hand pump is lost shooting time and compressor is alot of extra bulk

Springer is less bulk but louder and takes time to learn .

if there was a diana 56TH but less weight and had a magazine id buy it! I think im looking for something that doesnt exist yet.
