Looking for the perfect pellet trap, QUIET

Someone was asking this question before. I made a wooden box to fit a sheet of absorbent paper, the very soft variety and filled the box with old cloths. No more paper slap just the dull thud sound of the pellet hitting the clothes.

I use a permanent marker to draw my targets of which I get nine and secure each corner of the paper to the box with blue tac.

"sheet of absorbent paper, the very soft variety"

You mean toilet paper, or as the old cowboys of the west called it, therapeutic paper :)

No I use the absorbent paper sold in the supermarket for use in wiping up spills etc in the kitchen.

i'll keep it in mind ..i kinda like that slapping sound myself lol ...

Yeah, that's what she said...

What you might want to do is maybe recess your target box into another box and then line the walls of the outer box with egg crate foam for sound absorption. Won't get rid of the slapping sound, but any slapping would only really be heard in the line of sight to the target. Anything outside of that would be damped by the foam.

So…. heres an “unethical life hack” that worked for me.

I set up a motion sensor in my backyard (technically a “driveway sensor/alarm) with sunflower seeds. Inevitably, a rat or other varmint would show up at night, and I would pop it. The next morning, i tossed it over my neighbor’s fence, then knocked on their door. I told them that I had shot a rat with my “pellet gun,” and it ran into their yard. I mention that I have been seeing them more and more over the last few weeks. Then I offer to pick it up for them with this trash bag I just so happen to have in my back pocket.

At the end, I say “well, I hope you don’t mind me shooting rats. I don’t like setting out snap traps and glue boards because I dont want to accidentally hurt someone’s pet or a beneficial animal, but I have no love for rats.”

I now get requests from neighbors to please shoot more. They’re all onboard with my hobby now.

Nothing buys discreet neighbors faster than a rat carcass.

jonny75904 Brillant!!! l love it!!!

Goldwing That is pretty damn quiet. How can neighbors hear that, especially with those tall walls/fences in the background. On the flip side, I thought I was pretty "quiet", shooting a .177 Redwolf w/ Donny Fl. but the duct seal trap was closer to my neighbors fence and after several weeks of 2-3 hour/day shooting sprees during the COVID lockdown, I would hear windows slamming at my neighbors.

That's a sneaky way to continue to shoot, love it!

What about controlling the direction of the sound of the pellet hitting the target? If you set the target back into the back stop a few inches or maybe a foot I think that Target box would contain the sound and only let it out in the direction back towards the shooter?

Oh I'm sorry I went back and looked through this thread and I see that Harry Moreland already suggested that idea.

Like you, I previously used a box filled with old clothes which made it quiet for back yard target practice but the box after sometime got heavy and warped, I wanted something that could also be easy to clean and save and recycle the used lead so my search lead me to the Super Target System Ballistic Target Trap. I purchased the 12x12 with 1” ballistic panel off of amazon, I also purchased a 1/2” ballistic panel and glued it to the back traps panel. I shoot my RAW HMx LRT .22 shooting 18gr @ 950fps @ 20yds and it makes a dull thud. The STS is quite expensive, 200 for box and 1” panel but it was well worth the investment to me to be able to shoot incognito in the city and recycle the lead, my RAW is quiet too. The ballistic panel is self healing. The box is rated for .22 rimfire (way over built for Airguns, weighs about 20lbs)), it is also built much more solid than my Do It All rimfire Target trap.

Can't believe I skipped over your sharing this great trap, what's the link to the "1/2” ballistic panel " you got from Amazon?

Did the 1/2” ballistic panel reduce the pellet hitting the steel in the back sharply?

See much of a fall in dB?

Can you video it maybe :)

Or ......

I put the lawn mower next to the target box and went nuts for a half a tin :)

Let's all go in for one of these and get a block each :)

I use the rubber mulch, with a sheet of that foam rubber anti fatigue floor mat stuff. but most of my noise is still the paper of the target "popping". Im thinking of spraypainting some scrap cloth with the target for testing.

anyone here do silkscreening? different target patterns on t shirt like (thin and cheap!) cloth could be useful.

note: I do most of my shooting by necessity, indoors, down a short stairwell in our apartment, (whenever the wife is at work lol) and share too many think walls with other families. I can get away with my very moderated ap16 22, but the report on my .30 L2 even with the big suppressor the report's too loud in here. so as much SSHH as I can get is welcome!

I have to say, and not bragging cause I’m not that type, but this has got to be the quietest pellet trap yet of all I’ve used. I’ve been testing my design now for the past couple of days and it scores high on all these areas-

1. Portability- see line item 10

2. Weight

3. Sound reduction- all I hear is my gun rapport

4. Pellet containment

5. Compactness/easily stored/stackable(if more than one is owned)

6. Simple to maintain- mulch can be used over and over, and all pellets trapped inside can easily be removed

7. Parts easily sourced, except one item

8. Holds targets well. No need for tapes or pins. Simple, reusable magnets is all that’s needed

9. Completely weather safe.

10. If you have multiples of these, targets can be easily set up for a full on range, and reset up to different target set up configurations easily

ill stop there. The one negative- not all can build it. If I see a big enough request for these I’ll consider making and selling these.

Just yesterday while re tuning my impact I shot close to 300 pellets into this trap. It’s held up super well!
