Looking for the perfect pellet trap, QUIET

I'm convinced that home depot's rubber tire mulish is very quiet but..........

When the pellet hits the paper that slap is still to loud for my backyard

So what I'm looking for is to soften the sound impact on the target box I'm shooting

Here's a cardboard box with cellophane over the top but the slap is still to loud

So the search continues for the perfect trap with a soft quiet impact entrance

Next, maybe a very light cloth may work to soften the sound entrance

If I shoot at a box of open rubber mulch there almost a zero report, so paper, cardboard and such causes the report back

I go to the thrift store and buy the biggest size heaviest denim blue jeans and jackets I can find. I cut off the metal buttons. Stuff a cardboard box full of them as tight as you can. Tape the box completely with duct tape. I tape a whole sheet of targets on and blast away. Very quiet. When the box gets heavy, cut it open, inside a large tub, shake out the pellets to recycle, re-stuff with denim, re-tape and shoot again, rinse & repeat. Use whatever size box you want.

I agree. The rubber mulch works very well and is relatively easy to maintain, but the smack onto the front that holds in the mulch (cardboard or whatever) can be loud for backyard suburban plinking, especially for extended shooting sessions.

I'm sure you are aware of duct seal. Much more of a pain in the butt to maintain. I use an electrical box filled with ductseal. I put a paper target in front and before a shooting session I spray it with a light mist of water from a squirt bottle. It softens the paper and the smack is greatly reduced. The sound that is produced is now a "thud" from when the pellet hits the duct seal.

Good luck

I note that even when a pellet hits your paper targets you get the slap on the paper, no matter what you stuff in the box, so the issue is somehow to reduce the sound off the target that needs to be thin and soft and the rubber mulch will do the rest

I thought of that to, to spray the target with a mister to soften the target sound, your on the right track thank you!

No offense here, but perhaps you should find another place with more freedom. I moved away from the city right after we were married, way to restrictive!! I have lived in the country since, more freedoms less costly by far. Dont know of any way to quiet that impact! To me it is music!

I would love more space just to get away from barking dogs :)

Like you, I previously used a box filled with old clothes which made it quiet for back yard target practice but the box after sometime got heavy and warped, I wanted something that could also be easy to clean and save and recycle the used lead so my search lead me to the Super Target System Ballistic Target Trap. I purchased the 12x12 with 1” ballistic panel off of amazon, I also purchased a 1/2” ballistic panel and glued it to the back traps panel. I shoot my RAW HMx LRT .22 shooting 18gr @ 950fps @ 20yds and it makes a dull thud. The STS is quite expensive, 200 for box and 1” panel but it was well worth the investment to me to be able to shoot incognito in the city and recycle the lead, my RAW is quiet too. The ballistic panel is self healing. The box is rated for .22 rimfire (way over built for Airguns, weighs about 20lbs)), it is also built much more solid than my Do It All rimfire Target trap.

Early on in my days on AGN I found a thread that said the type of corrugated plastic used on election signs was quieter than cardboard. So I got an election sign but never compared it to cardboard.

I often use HVAC foil tape to cover the holes or even cover the entire piece of plastic. One time I used either flashing tape or house wrap tape I had laying around and felt it might have been a bit quieter.

However, I don't think it was as quiet as the Duct Seal putty.

Get a much larger box than your target, fold the opening flaps inside, lay it on its side, put your entire target into and at the back of a larger box. You can even wrap something around the inside of the larger box to deaden the sound further.

It will act like a moderator on the sound of impact.

Alternatively , (or as well) get a dog whistle and keep them Barking, neighbors won't notice your noise.

Good luck.

The problem with duct seal is there's no way to shake out the pallets like rubber mulch and duct seal is about 5x the cost of rubber mulch

Maybe I'll try to take a thrift shop silk gauze, paint target dots on it in front of a box of rubber mulch, not going to get slap from silk gauze

Someone was asking this question before. I made a wooden box to fit a sheet of absorbent paper, the very soft variety and filled the box with old cloths. No more paper slap just the dull thud sound of the pellet hitting the clothes.

I use a permanent marker to draw my targets of which I get nine and secure each corner of the paper to the box with blue tac.
