Looking for mid-range FFP Scope recommendations

Hello folks,

I wanted to top off my fx impact .30 with a mid-range FFP scope, and on the top of my list is the Athlon Optics Midas TAC 6-24x50 FFP. Before I commit however, I wanted to poke around the forums here for any advice or suggestions for something in the same price range, or within a delta of $200 dollars plus or minus (Price on Amazon now is around $669 for MOA).

The Athlon Optics Argos BTR GEN2 6-24X50 FFP is also of consideration and it's also cheaper too, and has IR, but at that price range, the glass is most certainly insuperior.

Both have MOA reticle which is my preference, but I wouldn't knock off a solid MIL option either. Preference is FFP, because I do a bit of small game hunting too. It was previously mounted with the Athlon Talos BTR 4-14x44 scope.

I'm going to be shooting at distances of 75-100 yards, but wouldn't mind it stretching out to see even 150 or 200 yards (as close to seeing the pellet holes).

Thank you.

I have two Athlon Midas Tacs. One on my Steyr LG110 Hunter 5.5mm and the other on my Crown. I have used them extensively in the field. I dial for every shot and it tracks perfectly. Very happy with the quality of the class. The zero stop is super handy. Having the windage turret capped is a nice addition. My previous scope on the Crown did not have that and more than once the windage setting changed brushing up against my leg whilst carrying the rifle in the field. Cost me a few pigeons before I noticed the shift.

Have you checked out the Bushnell Match Pro? Its sold direct from Bushnell, so there is no mark up. Probably similar in sales strategy to the SWFA line of scopes.

Thanks for the recommendation there! The Bushnell is definitely a very competitive choice, and has10 yard parallax too which I forgot to mention is a must, and is cheaper too. Sadly it looks like the IR version is sold out till November... But thanks again for the suggestion!

I personally have not. But a week ago or so, Joe Rhea (Cyclops) reviewed it and he said it was awesome. If I can find it again, I will send you the link

I'm a firm believer in Athlons, price check, durability, I've inadvertently abused mine, still zeroed check, features check, useability check, I'm told they have a great warranty and customer service though I've had a problem with their scopes check. My pet peeve is that people spend way to much money on scopes. Most gunners shoot 100 yards or less, the Athlon are the scope of my choice, save moneyfor more toys.

Don’t limit yourself to 10y minimum parallax scope.
For couple of months I was looking for a scope for my .25 cal rig and just couldn’t find anything I like that could focus down to 10y in my price range
Then something HIT me , I never, ever shoot mine .25 cal or .30 cal closer then 25y, there is so many more choices if you can live with 25y minimum parallax.
Worst case if you ever need to take a shoot closer then 25y you can always turn down the magnification and you will see everything crystal clear.

I am looking for similar goals for a scope and yes it is not easy. I am waiting for Joe Rhea to post his review of the new Vector Optics Continental 34mm 5-30x56FFP scope. It is true there are not many scopes really designed for air rifles as ideally the parallax should go down to 10 yards yet have high magnification since the goal is to get hole in hole when also using it for target shooting along with FFP for me is my preference. I am hopeful that the new 34mm Continental will fit that as it has Schott glass, zero stop, lifetime warranty, illuminated and a nice recticle. The only other scopes I found that do that were $1500 and higher or I sacrifice and go with a lower magnification or higher parallax, so I am holding out to see how he reviews it as he does not BS. I am hopeful but only time will tell; I heard he should be posting it in a week or two on his YouTube channel, aka Cyclops... If it does not pan out another scope that is good but lower magnification is the Bushnell Match Pro which is also on my list of scopes sold only directly from Bushnell.

I bought one of the Tac Optics 6-24 ffp scopes on sale with HIGH expectations . Been a fan of Bushnell since they bought Bausch and Lomb in the 90s (I think). Was quite disappointed . For a Japanese glass and mechanism scope, very underperforming. I'm not saying it's a bad scope btw. Just that comparing it side by side with my Midas Tac 6 - 24 ffp, glass is less clear and less bright and the adjustments are less distinct. The reticle is fine and I like the turrets, as well. I started a thread about this months ago.

Got a chance to compare it to the Vortex Strike Eagle 6-25 this weekend. The Strike Eagle is a very likeable, comparable scope but I felt the Midas Tac glass still edged it out when spotting 22 pellet holes at 100 yds.

I bought a 34mm Discovery HD 5-30x56 and am rather disappointed in it. Granted its only a $399 scope it doesn't want to seem to focus clearly past 18-19x and it's a 30x scope reminds me of the MTC VIPER PRO 5-30x not clear past 20x. I recommend neither if you are expecting perfect glass.

Try the $224 BARRA 5-25x50 SFP Mildot from SUPCASE on EBay it's a Japan scope 10 yard side focus offer $175 maybe he counters $185 or $200 free shipping for a $999.99 scope. Don't buy his $455 version it's the same scope as the $224. Don't like it sell it for more than you paid since its a $999.99 scope (plus $28.00 shipping!!!) you are paying $200 or less for (shipped!!!).

Has a 10 yard side focus!!!

My second order from him already.

Amazon is for reference only don't pay $999.99 a $28.00 shipping!!!

I wouldn't pay $800 for it. I bought a lot of Vector scopes direct from one of the importers before they went through distrution and that markup $800 is crazy insane on that one.

I'm borrowing Arzrover's Bushnell tac optics that he mentioned above. It's on the rifle I'm borrowing. For whatever reason I can't snap in the focus perfectly??, the turret marks don't line up with the line on the housing that well, and they are not distinct with a fair amount of lash. This scope definitely falls short of the Athlon Midas TAC! I don't know if it's Jap or Chi but this provides information that can be valuable, mainly that mid priced Chi can beat out Jap scopes.

Plus I owned the 3-12x44 version of the Bushnell described above which had the same problems but a horrible eyebox.

I also remember when the Athlon Cronus first came out. The turrets were a lot like these in the Bushnell. It took a year before Athlon "basically yelled" at LOW to make them better.

No, No, NO, forget about the other scopes in this price range and get the Athlon Midas TAC, it's worth every penny! Why?? because there's always going to be a combo of disappointments with the other scopes. Lesser glass, mushy turrets, turret click lines that don't line up with the one on the housing, lash, poor tracking, funky reticle, take your pick, those other scopes are bound to exhibit at least a few if not more!

Though I have to say that the reticle in the Vector 5-30x56 has the best of all including the Midas TAC, though of course I'm biased with all .2 mil tree reticles. Whoever designed this knew what they were doing.

A lot of solid feedback here folks, thanks all so much! I'm going to wait it out a little more to see if I can snag a deal on some of the scopes mentioned above, the midas tac is still a top contender too. Like a post said above, I too believe there is a return in value when buying scopes for airguns, so in the price range of $500 - $800 seems to offer the most value to me for the type of scopes on the market, and for my purpose of shooting. Keep in mind I am just average shooter, and not going into any competitions any time soon.
