Long range with the Benjamin trail .22

I was out with the trail the other day shooting some groups and checking zero and noticed there were birds coming in to my right and landing in a dirt patch so I swung around and guessed them to be 50 yards out. I didn't think I had time to get my range finder out so I held for 50 and hit low but it stayed there. Reloaded and held accordingly. Smacked him right behind the wing. I later ranged it at 65 yards. Once I sat back down another flew in farther out. I ranged this one first and got 95 yards. This was the farthest shot I have attempted with this rifle so you can imagine my excitement when I let off the shot and it starts doing backflips and I knew I hit it in the head.

"Gshadow177"Nice shot. But just curious arent morning dove out of season?
I don't think that's a morning dove in some places they have a Eurasian collard dove that i think your aloud to hunt all year round. Not sure on the laws because we don't have any around here but yes I'm pretty sure it's legal. Also the reason for the name collard dove is because they have a little bit of a black ring on them if you look at pic 2 on the back of the birds neck you can see some black feathers that's where the bird get's its name "collard dove".

AirgunMan is correct 100%. It is a Class C felony to shot migratory gamebirds out of season resulting in your gun/ vehicle being taken and jail-time. I would pass on the shot unless you know for certain; not worth the risk! Eurasian-collared doves are slightly larger and lighter in color than a morning dove but most identifiable is the band on the back of the neck. Like he said, every state is different so be sure you can take them with an airgun. You might want to edit dates and photo's as this could be used against you in a court of law.
You may think this is a joke but I was "caught" hunting out of season (season was open in a different part of the state where I thought I was) and I had to appear in court. Because I was stopped early in the day I had not shot a duck. The judge gave me a $200 fine and told he would have had to send me to jail, a Dentist and my lab tech, if I would have had a duck on me.
Thought you might want to know

Mourning Doves are not legal to take in any state with an airgun at any time even during open season. They are considered a federally regulated species like a duck and can only be shot with a shotgun in the US. Hate to burst your bubble but that is a fact. As responsible airgun hunters you need to be aware of the law and you don't want to put a bad light on all airgun hunters. Know what is legal in your state and don't shoot it unless your sure.

If by "shot" you mean with firearms, then you might be right. But they can also be shot with bows and crossbows, and they can be hunted with falcons and dogs.

And in Arizona, at least, Eurasian collared doves are regulated separately from all other dove species. They can be shot with airguns, handguns, slingshots, even "hand-held projectiles," whatever that means.

Migratory being the key word. In California Eurasian Collared Doves are now legal year round with no limit. There are a few other dove species listed but I am not familiar with them and my area of Northern California has plenty of Eurasian Collared Doves so I don't even bother researching the other ones. All I know is the classic Mourning Dove that everyone thinks is great to shoot with an pellet gun is not on the legal list due to its federal migratory status and every state has a season and you can only use shotguns as a firearm. Don't know about air powered shotguns as these are really cool but I have only seen these recently.
