Long distance slug gun options

Hi guys

I’m looking for some advice on slug caliber and barrel length, for hunting purposes. I currently have fantastic guns covering 6-75 yards for hunting/pesting. However, I’ve noticed that when I go to 85, 100, 150, that my knock down power isn’t exactly what I’m looking for. Whenever I shoot beyond 50-65 yards, I switch to slugs, especially if the wind is blowing. At distances beyond 20 yards, I’m shooting the Uragan .25 and it is never, ever off. Most reliable gun in my possession.
My .25 slug (32.8g) doesn’t always “knock out” the intended pest as I’d expect. Hades are traveling at around 960 and slugs at flying at 865. Now, for slug expansion purposes, I realize (believe) that I need more speed but it shoots the hades so we’ll at given speed that I don’t want to change tuning.
My plan is to buy a FX Impact to make it a slugger but I don’t know if:

1. I should I go .25 cal (with increased speed compared to current setup) or .30 cal?

2. 600 mm or 700 mm?

both will have a moderator attached which will increase length.
Difference in cost of ammo is not a deal breaker but is being considered.
thanks in advance for everyone’s help

What prey are you hunting/pesting?

I suspect an FX M3 .25 caliber with a slug kit producing ~90 fpe will suffix for any small to medium-sized game you may be after. I have both the 600mm and the 700mm barrels for my M3 and I find the 600mm barrel to be more maneuverable than the longer 700mm barrel. And the FX Impact sporting the 600mm barrel does not give up much in velocity/power when compared to the 700mm barrel.

The modded .22 caliber Impact used by Matt Dubber is in deed a formidable weapon. Matt and other South Africans are restricted by law to air guns of .22 cal. maximum.

I purchased an FX Impact mk2 in .35 cal and replaced the .35 caliber kit with a .22 caliber kit. The power output is awesome, however, for energy levels of > 75 fpe, I prefer the .25 cal -- that's just me.

I can only speak for my impact mk2 25cal 700 barrel slug liner A, the nsa 36.2 slugs are perfect for the gun. The nsa slugs in general are the best, the 33-43gr slugs I have never went heavier than the 36.2 but many others have great results with the 38&43gr . The 36.2 do great from 850-950 but I mainly shoot them @870fps just so I can get more shots from a fill and still plenty of power. Hope that helps

I would go with the 30 you have 25 and 22. But less ammo selection. I don't really care about price of ammo if it shoots good. For hunting I don't know. But 30 cal pops are loud. I like 22 cal to. Jsb is making a 30 knock out. Can't wait. 30 cal has a little kick. You need a moderator like a shogun .

I have a few model's of 30 caliber's, including an Impact modded to shoot heavy slugs fast. I've tried the .25 slug kit in it as well and have since went back to the .30 caliber configuration. The benefits of the .30 literally outweigh benefits of the .25 for me. For you, at the ranges you want to shoot, and with those tough prehistoric pests that you hunt in Florida, I would go with the 30 caliber.

As far as the .22 Impact goes, we owe a lot to those guy's down in South Africa (and in Sweden, and here as well) for what the Impact has evolved to in the .22 caliber over these past few years. However their species of pest is predominantly the pigeon and a medium sized varmint that die at the impact of the .217 caliber easily. The Hybrid slugs are phenomenal on birds and small rodents, as that is what they were designed for. Unless going with the heaviest grain of .217 slug, you will carry a lot better momentum and stopping power with the .30 caliber. The impact of a .30 caliber 47 grain FX Hybrid slug, or even heavier NSA slug offering would be my choice for the iguana at the ranges you want to shoot them at. Imagine the impact and transfer of energy of the .30 deep hollow point FX Hybrid at any speed; you won't have as many runner's or swimmer's!

Here's two charts to go over for the retained energy. One of a .25 in 38.5 grain and the other of the .30 in 50 grain. Both carrying the mail, but with obvious different B.C. numbers.

Bama

I am hunting/pesting iguanas as an occupation.
I don’t have the impact yet but I already have a 700mm .22 barrel kit so I plan to test .22 slugs at those distances. However, I have zero experience in testing at 950+ speeds. I plan to buy the Impact (.25 or .30). I’d prefer .25 for the sake of available ammo and cost but if .30 flies more consistent and/or bucks the wind better, the cost won’t be a factor. I am leaning towards the .25 for these reason and imagine that tuning 950+ speed may deliver enough energy with .25 but I want to minimize chances of not getting what I am trying to accomplish. 600mm vs 700mm matters only performance wise as compact-ability is not an issue.
I have only shot a .30 cal once (about 10 shots) and it definitely kicks back a little compared to any of my .25’s.

Thank you guys. Great advice and info. Although barrel length doesn’t have to be as short as possible, it would be nice if it didn’t matter.
has anyone tested different lengths?

Barrel length definitely effects the potential power and speeds. Look at it this way, you can always de-tune a 700mm barrel, but a 600mm barrel limits it's top power. I have one pcp that I wish came with a longer barrel that I could de-tune if need be

My 2 cents...

I own the Impact M3. I originally bought the 600mm but then "upgraded" to the 700mm

Both are equally accurate, some would argue the 600mm more so bc there is less POI shift. However the 700mm will give you another 20-30fps in velocity. You may want to do one of a few things to stiffen the barrel a little. I hear the barrel holder works well. Or you can torque the barrel using a 14x20mm CF shroud.

600mm and 700mm both shoot slugs equally well in terms of accuracy.

As far as caliber goes just go with what you want bc everyone has a different opinion. I went with .25 and I love it. But some people say .30 bucks the wind more, however you will get less shot as well. All depends what is most important to you. I honestly think I would be happy with any caliber .22, .25 or .30

As far as a moderator goes, I think if the Sumo and Ronin are both great for the .25 and .30 (I went with the Ronin, bc why not, it looks amazing) BUT the Fat Boy with the muzzle brake is the sexiest as far as looks. And I BELIEVE it is actually quieter than the Ronin in FRONT of the gun, but a little louder from the behind the gun. Only a few dB's either way, you'll be fine with any of the above.

Great, which slug used on your sk19?
