Little killer got killed

I have seven swallow families in boxes around my yard and fairy often a sparrow or a gang of sparrows comes in to break eggs and even kill the hatchlings. Last year they killed two families of swallow hatchlings. But this year I’ve shot at least six or seven sparrows. Hopefully they won’t succeed this year.

Stupid question. I never shoot sparrows for one reason. There are so many little brown birds. How the heck do you know it's a sparrow? I know what cowbirds look like M&F, but I have brown birds with stripes etc. Are they all sparrows?

Females can be difficult to identify one type of sparrow to the other. Males are easy to tell apart. The vocalization of English sparrows makes them easy to identify also. I have a bird identification app on my phone I often use, Merlin.

Cmatera, not a stupid question at all, but it’s not too hard to ID house sparrows, just need to study a tiny bit. As stated above, the males are easy, females are a little more difficult. Check it out. https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/House_Sparrow/id#

You don’t want to accidentally shoot native sparrows, so just shoot the male house sparrows till you can positively identify the female house sparrow. It won’t take you long to get it down.

PS, great shooting Dave, btw, I had a 6 successful tree swallow broods from my boxes and gourds
