Today, I stalked and sat. My hunting all depends on the weather and the woods. If it’s wet or windy and open, I like to stalk. If it’s still or brushy, I like to sit.
The heart shot Fox was 62 yards. I was walking the open creek bank and that was as close as I could get. He was watching me all the way. He started to get a little skidish and stopped for a second too long. The Black was about 35 yards. He was in a crotch of a big oak. He too was watching me. All I could see was his ears and one eye. I managed to get a good rest and made the shot. As for the other 2 Fox and Grey, I shot them from the same log I was sitting on. The first Fox was about 15 yards away. He was chewing on my cousins deer blind. Must be something they like in the T-11 siding. I shot the second fox out of self defense! The creek water was pretty high. There was a log across the creek and I was sitting on it. The little bugger knew I was there and proceeded to cross, all the time giving me heck. So, at about 10’, I dropped him off the log and in to the creek. As for the Grey, not much to tell. Maybe 20 yards in a big Beech tree. I did hit one other squirrel. But he made it into a hole. Kind of bummed about that one. I did miss a couple others. My worst shot was at a big Fox on a log about 10 yards away. Picture perfect picture. I hurried the shot. Didn’t consider that I shoot about 1 to 1 1/2” low at that distance. Just bad judgement on my part.
