Summary from Alan on Airgunguild:

White: used on NPT threads up to 3/8 inch
Yellow: used on NPT threads 1/2 inch to 2 inch, often labeled "gas tape"
Pink: used on NPT threads 1/2 inch to 2 inch, safe for potable water
Green: oil-free PTFE used on oxygen lines and some specific medical gasses
Gray: contains nickel, anti-seizing, anti-galling and anti-corrosion, used for stainless pipes
Copper: contains copper granules and is certified as a thread lubricant but not a sealer

For HPA use, either the white or the yellow will do just fine. They only differ in terms of thickness, the yellow being the thicker of the two and therefore easier to work with (easier to handle and need fewer turns). Being more substantial, it’s also less likely to shred and have a small piece get blown downstream where it might contaminate a valve seat.

However I’ve never had any problems with the white and I have a lot of it from years ago so I’ll keep using it until I need to buy more.

BTW, Dupont has never manufactured this product and they even went so far as to publish an article disavowing the use of their Teflon trademark to describe PTFE tape.

Great information, I never knew there were this many variations and have never seen any other than white and green but didn’t know what green was used for.. I’m going to go get some of the green and gray. Thanks!

Happy Holidays Trig.

The biggest problem with the use (or misuse) of PTFE tape is folks use the tape on parallel or straight threads. This is wrong. Straight or parallel threads seal with seal rings either on the bottom of the fitting or under the top flange of the fitting, NOT the threads. Only tapered pipe threads seal on the threads, NPT or BSPT. Most high pressure air gun fittings are BSPP (British Standard Pipe Parallel).
