Leshiy Classic .22 High Power Tuning???

Good afternoon everyone.

This working from home as a doctor is driving me crazy at times lol. So my brain is thinking.

The gun i keep going back since i started is the Leshiy. There is just something about it. Even though the air tube is small and load one pellet at a time, then break, reload, repeat..... lol. It packs even nicer into my backpack for hikes then the Lelya.

So i put a .22 350mm barrel in it. I am thinking of taking the 12 Joule Huma regulator out of it and put the regular Huma regulator in it. It came with both. Question is, how well can i get the Leshiy to fire heavier slugs / pellets in .22? Can it get those heavy rounds into the upper 800 / lower 900 fps for hunting? I ask because the barrel is short, and the airtube will likely be eaten up much faster with such needs placed by the Huma regulator???

I appreciate the feedback.

Gabe

The thing to consider with slugs in the Leshiy barrels is the bore diameters are very small. I believe some have had success with .2165 Nielsen's, AVS, and others though.

In terms of power output, the Huma can be cranked up pretty high. 150bar yields enough power to drive 17.2 - 20.2gr at a respectable velocity, and you could get anywhere from 12-17(?) shots depending on a few factors.

I do enjoy tuning my Leshiy at 50+ FPE with the .25cal Hades. It's a relatively pointless tune, no more than 12-14 shots - but seeing and hearing the devastation from such a small PCP is special 😂

I will warn you that once you start cranking on the Leshiy for power, it gets hard to shoot. Even with the 350mm barrel on it the thing gets spastic. You will notice as you tune your gun over the chronograph, when you start approaching 800fps the gun changes from sweet to angry. I am shooting 25cal slugs out of mine and it’s just not a fun gun to shoot anymore. And I don’t have it maxed out. Never max out your Leshiy. It’s not healthy for the gun.

That is what I suspected. So upper 700 FPS is the sweet spot whether I keep it at .22 or .25. Makes sense. I wonder what the energy will be like from that. So far it has shot the griffin slugs with the 12 joule Huma just fine. Haven’t tried Nielsen slugs yet. At those speeds is it sufficient for game bird hunting in florid?

thank you for the input

I would guess the Lelya in .25 can be tuned higher though....

For the last year or so I have been scratching my head on why guys are so hung up on FPE. Is it because we are enamored with the Brits and think it’s cool lingo. The bottom line is this. Unless you are shooting a big bore PCP at large game, let go of the FPE thing. Here is why. The slightly larger pests that we might take with a PCP, 22-30cal still require a head/neck shot to put down humanely. No matter how much FPE you are pushing. For the smaller critters that tumble with body, or heart lung shots, most guns out of the box produce that easily. I personally focus on the fastest, flattest most accurate pellet/slug I can shoot without killing my gun. I let the FPE fall where it may because shot placement and yardage estimate errors are more important to me. Your gun will tell you where it’s happy with every projectile weight.

I dunno. Mine is pretty fun with a huma reg, 23 CCW on the HST, 130 bar on the reg, 25.4 JB king .25 running in the 850-860 FPS.

How many shots do you get out of it?
im thinking of keeping the Leshiy in .22 as the Lelya is .25.

any input on going down to .177??? With the slugs available in .177 now, seems like you could get more shot count and still bird hunt with it???

I don't think you will have any issues getting some good power in 22. With reg set to 130 bar I can push the JSB 18.1 to 950 fps easily. Here are some fps of different pellets I was able to chrono out of my Leshiy. Reg set to 130bar for all pellets - gun is still completely in control at these settings. Forget about slugs, the Leshiy barrels just don't work well with them.

  •
  • H&N Barracuda Match .22 21.14 @ 870 fps (~35.5fpe, 350mm barrel, 20 turn CCW)
  • JSB .22 Monster v1 25.39 @ 830 fps (~38fpe, 350mm barrel, 24 turn CCW)
  • JSB .22 18.13 @ 950 fps (~36fpe, 350mm barrel, 20 turn CCW)
  • JSB .22 18.13 @ 900 fps (~30fpe, 350mm barrel, 18 turn CCW)

I shoot 29gr slugs out of mine at 820fps. But I had to make a slug barrel. You are probably not going to find a slug to shoot out of any caliber Leshiy barrels unless you invest in some sizing dies. LB1444 is pushing his gun pretty hard and like mine, it is more like shooting a spring rifle than a pcp. If he would back his down to 13-17 clicks CCW, that’s how a PCP should feel when you shoot it. Tune your Leshiy to shoot 18.1gr pellets around 800fps. You and it will be very happy. Your shot count will be where it should be. Do 110b on the reg setting.

I think he can get a bit more out of his Leshiy with the 350mm barrel. I don't have the .22 barrel any longer, but when I was tuning with it and I had the reg set to 125 bar (Huma reg, not stock) and with the stock airtube I was sending the JSB 18.1 @ 900fps and only using 5 bar per shot. That gives well over 20 shots on a 250 bar fill - I think it's a great middle ground where you maintain accuracy but still get very usable power out to 100 yards if needed.

It still amazes me what the Leshiy Classic is capable of achieving in terms of caliber and speed. I got mine last year in October and have it currently tuned for 610 fps in .22cal., 15.89gr using the 250mm barrel. I currently use it as my ratting gun around the house. I still haven't bought extra barrels and different calibers since the introduction of the Leshiy 2 but feel that I need to before they are discontinued and gone.

I had 2 Leshiys. I just sold one with a .22 350mm barrel to help fund a Leshiy 2. I still have another one which I have kept both the .177 and .30 350 barrels.

With the reg set to 125bar I am able to push the 13.43 .177 JSB to just under 900fps. I can also send the H&N 46.3gr @ 735fps for just under 60fpe. There's a little kick with the .30 setup but still totally shootable out to 40-50 yards.

It amazes me the extremes this little 4lb wonder can be pushed to without sweating much at all. I don't own an Impact, and likely never will, but I wonder if the caliber can be swapped and power settings adjusted as quickly and as accurately?

I have a impact. So far it is very intimidating to work on. So I have left it alone. But I am going to turn it into a 30cal monster spitter for deer. Well here in FL and GA:)

seems like 125 bar is the sweet spot for what we are looking at. I haven’t looked at accuracy yet. Building pelllet traps so HOA can’t complain in case someone opens their mouth. But so far the griffin slugs are fitting just fine in .22 in the Leshiy (I think they are .217 actually). The .25 slugs will absolutely not fit:( but my friends Hatsan with the tray eats the slugs like candy. It’s like a Glock takes any ammo and says thank you. God I hate my Sig 229 sometimes... jams on anything but perfection. But that’s a different topic Blahahahahahaha.

thank you everyone again.

17 shots from 225bar to 120bar. I have an extended air chamber made by John Hagan. 350mm barrel. Donny moderator.

That is very cool

I believe the Leshiy is more efficient in 22 vs 177 at any given power level. Something about the size of the transfer port relative to the bore.

So one would expect a higher shot count with 22 cal 13.43 grain JSBs vs the same weight 177s.

As far as you first post, is the sub-12 hammer spring installed in your Leshiy? If you switch to the regular Huma do you plan to put the original hammer spring back in?

There is an AGN poster who has commented on the upper limits of the sub-12 hammer spring with the regular Huma regulator and plenum but I can't recall the user name nor can I find any of the threads. It was still pretty high but I don't know if it was capable of low 900s with heavy pellets.

If you decide to keep your Leshiy around 800 FPS like Vetmx suggested, I'm pretty sure you can do so with the sub-12 Huma but I believe you'll need to make sure the black plenum spacer is not installed. By the way I agree with him that the Leshiy is still a calm gun to shoot at that speed with 18 grain pellets.

When I first got mine the hammer spring was cranked way up. I didn't have a chronograph yet but that was one angry little Goblin.

All of my setting at 125 bar, except for the .30 setup, keep the hammer spring under 20 clicks CCW from zero. To get the ~60fpe with the .30 I crank it up to 28 clicks.

I tried 140bar to see if there was any benefit. After cranking up the HS to get up to speed it was clear there was no benefit to getting more power - the platform hits a practical limit and then it's just blowing extra air. I got the .30 up to 70fpe but it was horrible to shoot.

Regarding the slugs - unless you get a slug barrel I wouldn't bother. I've tried the 15.5 gr .177 slugs and they just don't hold a tight group.
