Kill Zone

I grabbed this from a post by Bob Sterne over on AGG.

Bob does not claim it. He got it somewhere else.

I thought it was a good graphic which makes a very clear point.

I disagree. Please don’t gutshot a groundhog with any caliber.

I don’t think Lou was suggesting “ to gut-shoot” any critter or woodchuck. The point I take away from this is that every hunter who hunts at distance has to be very confident in their ability for precise shot placement so animals are not wounded and run away. I think most agree that is ethical.

If you think your abilities to do that are compromised due to caliber, skill, wind or distance; don’t take those long distance shots.

I think I can anchor one with one hit just about anywhere solid with my .22 Hornet ... I'd guess a .35 pushing a couple of hundred FPE would end one pretty quickly even if he was gut shot.

Hydrostatic shock... I'd think you would see quite a bit of it with a .25 hollow point slug churning along above 800 fps. I realize it wouldn't be anything like a PB pushing a 40 grain pill around 2750 at the muzzle but it's more about what you are putting on your critter than what is leaving the muzzle, isn't it? But you knew that, you just forgot it momentairly.

The entire point of the graphic was to offer you a relative perspective on what you can get away with when you put more energy on target. If I had realized we needed a perfect picture of the exact shot placement required I would have asked for input on muzzle velocity, caliber, BC, projectile weight, distance to target and barometric pressure.

Don't take cartoon graphics too literally... It causes all sorts of confusion.

VERY interesting — and the different perspectives....

Now I want to see the source (Bob's post at GTA) with the original drawing — got late to the party (AND forgot the pop corn! 🙄 I know, my brain must be getting up there in years....).

I suppose a couple more drawings could be added — for (actually expanding) hollow points...? 🤔

Hi Matthias here you go: https://airgunguild.com/airgun-hunting/kill-zone/

I have had good results with the JSB HADEs in .25 cal from my FX WIldCat MkII compact, out to 65 yards on possums and raccoons with thoracic hits forward of the diaphragm in the lungs. They leave the Compact a 890 FPS. I too ascribe to the accuracy is better and HEAD shots are the best but.. sometimes you have to take what you get, but never gut.!

Which brings to mind a true story.. Thirty five years ago, hunting with a friend for rabbits, with his Britany. I'm carrying a double side by side 12 with buck in one barrel and birdshot in the other in case we kick up a deer. Dog goes into a patch of brush and out comes a young buck straight at me. He is more interested in the dog than me and is running right at me. I level the gun and at about six or seven yards go for the head shot. He goes down in a pile right at my feet. My buddy comes running over as the deer is kicking on the ground. I step up on the deers neck to end him as quickly and humanely as possible.

Take the deer home start skinning it out and I realize that I missed the deer. There are three or four pellet holes in one ear. The muzzle blast had knocked the deer out and stepping on it's neck had actually been what killed it. We ate him anyway.
