Decided to have a plink after lunch, grabbed my 177 Trail (renowned scope killer) and a tin of its favourite pellets, H&N Baracuda Match, set the paper at 35 metres and started. Top left. First two shots in the target as planned then a skip to the right. I thought nothing of it maybe a flyer or something. Kept shooting aiming at the bull, next 14 shots grouped as usual except not where I was aiming. The next 4 shots decided to go further west. I’d fired 20 pellets and knew something wasn’t ok. As you can see another 13 shots and the two remains bulls were no longer in danger as another scope had bit the dust.

This scope is one of Joe’s favourites 😂 a UTG 3*9*40 and it had been on the rifle for about a month before I fitted the ZR mount. Although this rifle is in my opinion very accurate it has killed about 3 times of what it was worth on scopes. I might look at buying a HW30S and trade it in. Pity though as I have invested a lot of effort and time to get this rifle to where it is. But I’m not enjoying spending money on scopes. Will have to do some research and speak to the bank of wife.

Thanks Christian I’m really looking for an effortless springer that you can shoot all day. That is accurate, won’t kill scopes and if needed humanely take pest birds out to 30 metres. I’ve read that this rifle is about 18 lbs cocking effort and shoots at about 650 fps but no mention of which pellet and weight. How’s yours going? Was it twangy prior to you changing the spring. Any info would be great.

those utg / leapers / centerpoint scopes have a lifetime warranty ( or they used to , anyway ) .... some i got poopty ones that i just kept exchanging in for same product until i got a good one.... it easier to do that here in fort worth when cheaper than dirt had a storefront where one could go in and place orders from them at a counter... but i cant tell you how many times i thought i had a good leapers 4x32ao , or a 3-9x32ao --- until the 2nd can of pellets. if they held zeo after 2-3 500 ct tins , they usually were keepers..... they were like $39 back then (2010)... by buddy swears by the bsa sweet .22 scopes..... they're $50. the gun probably shoots much smoother in .22 , because i dont hear them complaining about scopes.....especially the first run walmart .22 titans with the metal muzzle break....

Spring change had nominal improvement. If I had to change it again I would try the Vortek. Perhaps it will be no better, but just to see.

It’s definitely very easy to cock. Check out my thread for pellet performance, I have not shot it much lately, gonna try and change that soon.

I tend to shoot it inside of 20 yards. One hole groups with JSB 8.44 if I recall correctly.

Everything you read about the HW30 is correct. Cocking effort, speed (mine shoot right around the 620-650 ft.per second range) I use Crosman Premier lites (7.9) in the brown box for 5 of my 7 HW30'S and R7's. One of the HW30'S prefers H&N field target trophies and my oldest prefers JSB 7.87 I have used mine for offhand field target out to 35 yards and it plenty accurate at those distances. With a well placed head shot I keep the squirrels from my bird feeders and 1 month ago I got rid of a problem raccoon with a head shot @ 15 yards right off my roof ( not before he tore up a couple of my shingles though) A nice 4-12 scope and you literally can shoot that gun all day. Sometimes my son and I will go through a couple hundred pellets in one shooting session. Great gun. Good choice.

I’m replacing the scope under warranty. I’ve decided to try one more time with this rifle now that I have the ZR mount fitted and the scope will go on it without any pre contamination.

But having said that I’m now being drawn to the thought of purchasing a HW30S. I really don’t want another rifle as it’s true what my wife says “ you can only shoot one at a time” and I only have a small safe........but I can’t get rid of this thought. We’ll see.
