Just when I though I knew what I wanted....

I had decided I really wanted a .22 Wildca,t but then someone (on another site) asked why I didn't like the Tipan Mutant... which wasn't even on my radar. I've cycled through a number of PCP's, including a Marauder, FX Royal, Cricket, and now own a Brocock sl s6, but want another bullpup. I liked my .22 cricket but wasn't crazy about the magazine loading lever, or the rear cocking leaver, plus I had a bunch of silly things that I needed to keep fixing. I want reliable, accurate, quiet (willing to modify for quiet), and I really like the forward cocking lever of the Wildcat.... but... people seem to love the Mutant and are willing to put up with the clunky stock and rear cocking lever. Anybody out there have expereince with both guns? Thoughts?

Thanks!

They both have pros and cons. The Wildcat has a forward cocking lever but it doesn't has a power adjuster and it has lower capacity mags so you'll spend more time reloading. The Wildcat looks nicer but requires additional baffles to be quiet which makes it longer where as the Mutant is quiet out of the box. The Mutant also has a more adjustable trigger than most.

There is no way for someone else to decide which of those things is more important to you. Just buy the one you like. They are both good

One other piece of important info: the Mutant is only ugly because of the stock. The Mutant is $300 less than the Wildcat and that Michael Osyda guy is selling beautiful Walnut stocks for the Mutant for around $300.

As you already have a 22 Cricket, maybe a 25 Wildcat is the way to go so you don't have duplication in your collection. Or.... Buy the Mutant and sell your 22 Cricket to buy a 25 Wildcat and have the best of both worlds (from your point of view).

I appreciate all the feedback. I think I have settled on the Wildcat. The Compact Mutant is really intreguing to me but my gut tells me I will be happier with the ergonomics of the Wildcat. I know I will need to add a extra LDC to quiet it down, but I'm Ok with that. I've had to do that to every PCP I've owned, with the exception of my .177 Marauder.

I also took another look at the Vulcan, having wanted one for a long time, then asked a well know airgun tuner what his opinion was having worked on both the Vulcan and the WC, and got this response:Hi Don, I highly recommend the WC .22

So that settled it for me.

Your instinct is the right thing to listen to. It doesn't really matter what anyone else prefers when you are choosing between 2 or 3 great options. You know what you can and can't live with better than anyone.

I love my Mutant Shorty but I see it more as a second gun than my primary one. I like more power for my main hunting rifle. The Shorty is my fun woods walker and plinker. I tend to reach for it more often than my others because it's so light, short and quiet but I wouldn't want it to be my only gun.

I can definitely understand wanting reassurance that you're making the right choice. These things are expensive and you don't buy a new one every day but there is no wrong choice between guns like Wildcats, Vulcans, Crickets and Mutants. Plus, the desirability of the Wildcat means you could sell it fairly easily if you found it wasn't for you for any reason.

The high residual value of The FX Wildcat would make me feel a lot better about the retail price. Knowing you could sell it for just $200 less than you paid makes it a very low risk buy.

"RNMike"I don't have any experience with the Mutant, but I can say that I love my FX Wildcat .25! I did add a Huggett to keep her quiet. Holy crap is she accurate! I haven't found a thing I don't like. Not much else to say.
I just got my gun a couple hours ago RNMike and you was sooo right!!!!! I will never shoulder a better feeling gun,to top it off I been hunting with My Marauder for so long this Wildcat is actually quieter so I am not buying after market anything, but the scope and mag holders for it and just may add one baffle (but I IMHO don't think it needs it for my squirrel hunting needs) If my Marauder didn't run other prospects off after the first kill shot this one surly will not either! For all the ones that told me I was going to love this Fx Wildcat I thank you all. I am sooo glad I didn't change my order! the only bad thing is my nice 36" case from FX came damaged but thats shipping for ya and AOA has already took care of me in less than 3 minutes flat! So pleased best purchase and went so smooth!!!

LDM,all I can say is this wildcat is spot on I don't think I have ever shot a more sweetly engineered master piece.all I know is my first 50 yard group with Benjamin domed pellets was a little less that 3/8ths inch will post up videos on youtube tomorrow and provide links here as well if you want them.when I got an overwhelming feedback from a lot of the users here I knew my purchase was going to be grand, and I assure you it was I walked around inside after it got dark shouldering and holding it .....oh man just wait mine is over now and if I decide I want a larger caliber air gun i'll be going right back to fx for the bobcat mkll .30 and no I will not trade in my wildcat for it.the Kitty is here to stay!

Zebra - I still want a Mutant Compact. All I've seen and read, it looks like too much fun. Just going to get a Wildcat first.

Dave09 - looking forward to seeing those videos!

I ordered the scope today and will order the gun over the weekend. I got the Athlon Argos BTR 6-24X50 IR MOA that Chuck recommended. Here is the link to Chuck's write-up and a link to the scope on Midway:

I've never owned a First Focal scope before but Midway has a 90 day return policy, so I can play with it before I decide to keep it. I'll probably try a SWFA 12X42 if the Athlon doesn't work out.

All I can say is you will enjoy it. I have already sent all my buddies pics and two of 5 ordered them today a hour after I got mine so they are in high demand and should be a easy re-sale if you so desire.I assure you mine is here to stay even if I find a better gun.

I'm a fan of the Clearidge Ultra RM for lightweight hunting bullpups. At around 13oz your Wildcat will feel like a feather with one. It has a mil dot reticle, AO down to 10 yards, variable power and Japanese glass. I have one on my Mutant.

I have an FFP scope on My Cricket currently. I like it although mine is a 4-14x44. The advantages are obvious with an FFP. The disadvantage is that they are heavy. Mine is 21oz. I believe the one you ordered is closer to 30oz.

I guess a lot lot depends on what you intend to use it for but if you plan on doing any close range shooting (like some 15-20 yard pest control), you'll want something that has lower power settings and can focus down to that distance.
