You are absolutely correct. When I phoned my agent I was told to get appraisals for each. My reply was "That's great, but I cannot get these firearms in California any longer due to their laws."
I told my agent that I would tell him the values and he could charge me the cost of coverage. Appraisals are not necessarily needed, especially with product that is virtually irreplaceable. Yes, you still need to give them serial numbers and descriptions, but that's normal.
Unless you have had claims, you would also never know that while the agent will TELL you that your fancy car sound system is 'covered', it's NOT covered for that $2,000 you just paid for it. It's worth a small fraction of that cost because 'covered' to the agent means you are covered for a minimal amount.
Every upgrade you do to your vehicle must be called in to your agent and explained that you want full replacement coverage or you'red going to get a standard allowance value for your sound system.
