Join Me In my Journey Into Slug Use.

Like many here I have watch the use of slugs to increase power and accuracy downrange. I was thinking about getting some lighter weight slugs to use in my .Leshiy 22 cal 350mm barrel. With the Leshiy's flexibility in power adjustment I was hoping to be able to push the lighter weight slugs with enough velocity to be stable and accurate. Then it dawned on what the heck I got the AirForce Condor with what should be plenty of power in .22 cal to shoot slugs. So I went ahead and put in a order with NSA for a couple of sampler packs to test not only in the Leshiy but also the Condor. I also ordered and have received some Varmint Knockers weighing 22.5 and 24.0 grains in .217 diameter. The NSA that are coming are also .217 dia. as I understand that is the diameter LW barrels like.

The Condor I have was custom tuned and has a different valve in it which when I ordered the AirForce Ring Loc valve kit I did not know. I found out the Ring Loc kit would not fit the valve on the tank I have, so I went ahead and order another tank for $240 to use the kit. At least that is cheaper than buying a whole new rifle to try out slugs. While I was really wanting to wait for the new tank I got board on this Sunday and wanted to do some testing with the existing tank. I did some chrono testing first and then went outside to shoot some groups

The one thing I noticed was the slugs had to be pushed quite far in like 1/8" to engage the lands. If not pushed it It appeared to decrease velocity and who knows maybe accuracy. In my video you will see my second shot not even hit the target. I did not quite get the accuracy I was looking for especially at longer distance. I'm thinking maybe I need to go up to the .218 diameter slugs. I think the velocity seems okay but when I get the new tank and can utilize a larger ring lock valve maybe a little extra velocity will turn the trick. For you slug shooters out there I would like to get your opinions. Thanks Bill

Nice yard setup you have there , Watching your video and listening to your dialog I think you said it perhaps not enough revolution on the slugs .The size seems to be a common diameter used but perhaps they can spin them faster to get the stabilization needed . I hope you can get them sorted .

My original tank had a modified valve on it so, I either had to get a new tank or valve for me to use my AirForce Ring Loc kit. I ordered a new tank and got it today and did some initial testing with different weight pellets to get an idea of velocities that would mirror my slug weights. Once I get the velocities I think I need I will confirm with the slugs and then do some accuracy testing. Power should be no problem as the Condor has plenty. Bill

I have a 22.250 that will shoot the 55grn Vmax and Hornady BT and 52grn smk match at good accurate velocities 3600 fps e.g with a 26 inch 1/14 twist barrel I believe .

The 53 grn better BC bullets I have never tried but have read they require a faster twist to get more revolutions to achieve there stabilisation for the same speed fps , perhaps this is were your at needing a faster twist to achieve stabilisation for the same fps .

Regards .

The journey continued this Friday with the arrival of some NSA slug sample packs. I had tested some Varmint Knocker in 22.5 grain and 24.0 grain to start with and did not get the accuracy I was looking for. I did believe I was pushing them fast enough to spin stabilize. I would get a couple to hit close to each other and the group would open up. I decided to clean the barrel and it was not that dirty. I was shooting the Condor SS without the Sound- Loc kit installed but with an adapter with my Sumo moderator. I decide to go back to just the Sound-Loc kit as I thought clipping might be the answer. With that I started retesting the Varmint Knocker and Nielson's with my two different size AF Ring-Loc valves at .135" and .145" hole sizes. I started getting much better groups so I believe clipping was the issue. I have never been satisfied with the alignment of parts in the AirForce rifles. I also had to use three quarters of my windage adjustment to get on target. That was with flipping the rings around different ways to compensate.

I spent over two hours doing the testing and video recording of the process and shooting groups so I could share the journey with you guys. I had the the bad luck of either my video camera or the memory card failing so I lost all the video just getting the sound. And no I did not have the lens cover on. In the end I found a couple of combinations of slugs and Ring-loc valve sizes to work. It appears the Nielsens 27.0 grain and .217 dia, are the winners with the .145" valve. I also found I need to push all the slugs into the land to get a good air seal of the velocity would drop. I made up a little seating nut to do the job. The AF Condor is a power house but slow to load. Not the rifle to use when the pesting is fast and heavy. I'm thinking it will be great on groundhogs. One thing to note is these slugs will carry a lot further than pellets. I see with my Chairgun app my Wildcat in .25 cal will carry to 635 yards at a 24 degree angle while the 27 grain Nielsen's will travel 1142 yards at a 28 degree angle so caution is a must. Bill

Like I said I tried remounting the scope to gain some windage adjustment but with out success. Here are a few pictures of first walking the rifle back in at 18 yards with some pellets to conserve my slugs. Then sighting in at 50 yards with my SWFA 12x42 Mil Mil scope. Fired one shot then down approx. one mil. Bingo can't get anymore on than that. Looking forward to seeing what this rig can do. Bill
