JB Borepaste saved my Leshiy Hades build!

So let me preface this topic first by saying that I'm of the crowd "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." That being said, I've dabbled in tuning my PCP's when I felt there was more accuracy or efficiency to be squeezed out of an already great gun.

I own the EDgun Leshiy .22 cal with 350mm barrel. I fully intended on using this gun with the new JSB Hades pellets from the start, opting to get this gun set up for sub 40 yard pest control.

I own a Huma reg for the gun but opted to stick with the factory reg for now, and detuned it from 130 bar (factory) to 110 bar, and then with just a few turns of the HST brought the velocity of the 15.89g pellets to 830 fps for roughly 24 ft lbs at the muzzle. I am getting about 34 shots per fill from 250 bar down to 90 bar. Yes I said 90 bar. The gun now falls off the reg with no velocity spike for about 3 more shots before velocity drops in the mid 815 fps range. At 30 yards, there is no POI shift, so I may be able to go even lower at closer ranges but haven't tested it out yet.

The problem, despite various velocity tunes, is that the Hades pellet just didn't want to group well past 30-35 yards. Sure it could keep 1 inch groups at that range, but I was disappointed that I couldn't really push the pellet much further without opening up my groups.

So today I opted to try out some JB Borepaste and the Swab-Its I had sitting in my closet but never used. This is an ideal gun to try this out on as you have direct access to the barrel with just removal of the front cap/baffel insert and a bit of prep work with some masking tape, and you're ready to go.

I ended up prepping the barrel first with Ballistol and cotton patches to remove any lead buildup first until they came out clean. Then I cut a Swab-It to the proper length and hooked it up to my power drill and worked the paste from back to front in 10 passes. I then re-cleaned the barrel with Ballistol and cotton patches until the bore came out to a mirror finish with no further residue.

This is the end-result of my labor.

Groups in the first three rows are typical BEFORE JB Borepaste at 30 yards. After re-leading the barrel, I re-zero'ed the scope with groups shown below the line. I was amazed at how much more accurate the gun has become! The left-most group in the bottom row was my last 5 shot group and I was super pleased with the end result.

I've turned into a JB Borepaste believer at this point!

Well done! It’s very satisfying to get an improvement like that from your efforts, isn’t it?

I use it on every new barrel I prep for use. It won’t fix a real stinker but it often makes a good shooter even better. Never has a barrel done worse and at the very least it will go longer between cleanings.

That's a fact! That's why I love using it so much too. You can't mess up a gun with it but you sure can improve one with it!

So what is the Swab-Its and what is it that the bore paste actually does?

Swab-its are pull thru bore cleaning whips that are reusable. Not just for air rifles, but firearms as well.

JB Borepaste is a bore polishing compound. It smooths out and cleans the gun bore to a mirror finish. Look it up.

Thanks for the link. So is this technique a once and done for the life of the barrel? Or does one have to do this every so often? And can the swab-it be reused if the barrel needs polishing multiple times?

This is normally a once and done affair. You can continue to clean your barrel periodically should accuracy diminish but this technique should reduce how often you’ll need to clean your barrel.

The Swab-Its are reusable. Just rinse with water/mild soap and let dry.

I clean my barrels with Ballistol and cotton patches pulled through the barrel until clean. Only done when accuracy diminishes.

I also have been using Ballistol and cotton patches. Just wondering if the bore paste could give me a little better edge on accuracy.

So, smear a glob on the Swab-it, and make 10 passes (is that 10 in and 10 out OR 5 in and 5 out) is all that is needed? How do you know either is enough?

You’ll only need a little bit on the swab. One pass for me was breech to crown and back to breech.

"Then I cut a Swab-It to the proper length and hooked it up to my power drill".

I'm confused. The "power-drill" part suggests spinning the Swab-its while pulling through, but the "Swab-its are pull thru bore cleaning whips" suggests that not likely. Please clarify.

Thanks.

Ron, yes, to cut time with the polishing process, the whip can be chucked into a drill and spun while working it back and forth. This isn’t exactly it’s designed purpose but an improvised clever utilization while using polishing compound, lapping compound or Bore Paste to quicken results. Cut to length so that the plastic line isn’t too long to twist/tangle and such but just enough slack to comfortably run back and forth through the entire bore.

The whips also work great to just pull-through with solvent for periodic cleanings.

So, put a little on the swab once or add with each pass? Sorry for all of the questions. Just need clarification.
