Japanese Hunt Pigs with Airguns.

"oldspook"13 hunters x 350 days ~ 4500 hunting days

They only took 300 hogs in that time and they were hunting over bait? That's 15 man days per hog! They need to get some hunters on that project and send the scientists home.
Yeah. Sounds to me they need to get some people over there, who actually know how to hunt. I have never hunted a pig before, and I think even I would have a higher kill ratio than that.

Actually you would be surprised, I would put feral pigs intelligence somewhere in the range of a dolphin. They have very good eyesight and a sense of smell that surpasses just about every other mammal. You would be amazed how quite they can be and the speeds they can move.
I live in Northeast Texas and Texas has one of the largest population of feral hogs in the U.S.
We use everything from trapping, hunting, some experimental poisoning and still we are loosing the battle.
Traps only work for a short time after which the animals recognize what it is and will refuse to enter. I have actually seen a sow let her piglets go into the trap eat and set the trap off then she would nose open the door and let them out.
One thing that I find interesting is the fact that nothing was mentioned on the health of those pigs as there heart and vital organs are very close to the same as a humans, in fact pig heart valves has been used in human beings.
They can be extremely hard to hunt, as they do not have any set pattern and will change movement patterns on the slightest pressure.

I saw that story and read they got 800 in a short time. I wondered what they used. The pigs dont seem that large just from the one pic I saw.

I am sure a larger 303 air rifle would do the trick. I myself if faced with an attacking radioactive boar would use a shotgun like a Benelli. But if I was inside a vehicle, say a Bradley armored car...air rifle could work.
