Is anyone else burned out on people passing judgment on killing varmints?

Solo 1 and Longfellow. I think you are reading WAY too much into this. The point ( in my opinion ) was is the video too graphic. I personally didn’t think so but at least one person did. He has every right to comment to that affect . How do you get to chips on shoulders , daddy issues and henpecked from THAT? I’m I being judgmental? Perhaps but if you can explain how you came to your conclusions ( about henpecked etc) I’ll try to reconsider.

pinguiu01 sounds like he has some issues. *Smiles* ...no, I take that back ... ROFL.

lol hell, if you cant take the heat stay out of the kitchen ... i will pass judgement when i feel its called for, nothing burns me more than some idiot maring the image of airgunning by just wasting sht indiscriminately and actually 100% believes in his heart that killing wildlife is helping something lol .. yeah, nobody buys your saving the world by shooting songbirds on the countryside lol .. rats on a dairy farm ok .. real pests destroying your property ok .. or if your hunting to eat ok .. 'making up' a bullsht reason to kill things not ok

To be clear, I could care less about the comments. They don’t bother me, and I don’t take them personal.

What bothers me, is it just messes up the post and the thread. It changes it from: wow look at this cool shot I made at this pest at 80 yards…

To a defense about why I shot the darn thing in the first place. Or others will jump in, and support the original author of the post.

However, it’s still messes up the posts, changes the dynamics and the direction.

Possibly if we just all ignored them completely?

I don’t post on the hunting forum all that often. I read and comment a lot, and I see the comments that are made.

I will put the link down below, but it’s not going to be some kind of an epiphany when you open them. It’s just a snide comment that takes place in the thread and disrupts the flow. It happens all the time. Often, it becomes the new focus of the thread. That’s what bothers me. Just a general trend I’ve noticed on the forum of late.

This is a subtle art. Unfortunately it’s also pretty effective.

Consider too that every situation is different . How do you assume it’s just a bull poop reason to kill something? Chipmunks can do a lot of damage. I don’t think anyone is condoning killing song birds but while I DO NOT shoot them I could do with a few less robins. I understand that cardinals are a problem in spots. Even eagles in Alaska ? So it is with every species. Including dare I say humans. VERY complex subject. I hunt for sport groundhogs in particular. Two parts get me going. One is sitting and spotting them which some times means a considerable investment in time. Secondly making a long shot which tests my skill. I miss and if I didn’t I’d have no interest in it. Do I feel badly about killing yes to some degree but I balance that with the knowledge that it really helps the farmers. So while I agree killing “just for fun” isn’t in most people’s minds “ right” if it’s justified and ALSO fun then that’s what it’s all about.

Avoid thread-hijacking - Thread-hijacking is when a member attempts to derail a pre-existing discussion and take it away from its original topic. This behavior can be frustrating to members who want the discussion to proceed on course. If you wish to take a topic in a new direction that would otherwise derail the original topic, simply start a new thread for your own topic. Do not engage in thread-hijacking, as it reduces the quality of the forums for others.

A few people on this forum have decided it’s their job to judge others and their decisions.

They love to tell people that they are shooting too far. Or that they didn’t take the right shot. Or that they shouldn’t publish that video because it’s not a perfect kill.

These are Varmints… we are trying to get rid of them. If you don’t like it, don’t read the posts. And certainly don’t share your comments, and wreck the post.

You’re not going to change us, any more than we’re going to change you. So could we just have one place that we can post our hunting pictures and stories without a lot of BS?

Could you just keep your opinions to yourself, and quit trying to be the Conscience of worldwide Airgun shooting?

mike

Sounds like someone that can't shoot........ :D I'm kidding of course!

I am with you on this. There are those that think they need to tell everyone everything and nitpick everything. You will never get rid of them, or loose them, so might as well just ignore them and don't let them bother you. Varmints are pests and people have no issues trapping rats or mice on a sticky trap where they slowly die of starvation and dehydration. This seems ok, yet smacking a ground squirrel a bit off center ( where it will still die ) is a major sin and needs to be atoned for.

Now I personally feel that we should all take the best, most humane shot that we can do on anything. But there are always those times where a shot goes bad due to any number of unseen things. It happens and if people don't believe this.....then they are either not shooters or hunters.

You just gave up all your respect in that one sentance! you have gratified the killing of a living thing, of which you have no god given right to kill just because you don't like it or the so called threat it poses to your property!

The thing that makes me laugh more than anything is when someone calls a wild animal a "thief" animals don't understand the concept of theft, spend more on securing your valuables, don't blame the animal.

If you don't like criticism of your actions then don't post them on a public forum, but please don't tell people they can't comment or shouldn't, that makes you just a guilty as them I'm afraid.

I personally don't use specific AGN "forums" I simply search all new posts and I try very hard to ignore all of those particular hunting threads as they don't interest me, but very occasionally a point of view that is so silly comes across, it's impossible not to comment.

Yeah, I got a reply to my post last week about why I'm not shooting paper instead of ground squirrels. Here's the answer: Vermin makes a better POP sound than paper when hit! (Joke!) My first thought was WTF are you looking under HUNTING if you don't want to see it? I try to be ETHICAL when it comes to pesting. It truly bothers me when shot placement is not the best & that animal suffered but making them suffer IS NOT MY GOAL. Clean & humane kill shots are what I strive for but s--t happens. I don't need a MORAL lecture on what I'm doing. I get that the taking of life is a serious thing & I act accordingly. I don't like that people who don't know me are passing judgment on who they ASSUME me to be. We all have to decide for ourselves about the ethics involved. I don't need anyone else's help! The ONLY time I've passed judgment on this forum about hunting was when someone posted a video of a nighttime kill & then asked "what animal is this?" I couldn't help myself. It could've even been a neighbor's kid for all he knew. I just felt that ETHICS never even entered his mind (killing without even knowing WHATyou're killing ) & it pissed me off. (All that showed in the video were two eyes shining at the camera)

Well I live in the suburbs and have hunted since the 70's. This spring I had seven active rabbits nest in my backyard at the same time. I got into the PCP rifle hobby about the same time by pure coincidence. A couple of weeks ago there was a rabbit at 35 yards. Yes I shot it. Aimed for the eye and actually dropped it on the spot with a hit to the eye.......It wasn't the same feeling I get from downing a deer or a bear, or pheasant but you can bet I'll shoot the next one I see too. The beauty is I only have to justify it to myself.

my response:

I did not understand your first sentence. And it’s probably better that I don’t.

that said, there are a lot of people on this forum that enjoy shooting Varmints. I’m going to lump all of the pest animals under that one category. Varmint. I used to go out prairie dog shooting when I was a younger man. I had spent years reading about it as a kid, and it was something I definitely wanted to do as an adult. It was and is an incredible experience. The farmers absolutely welcomed us with open arms. They did not want to have to use poison.

I was all about long range accuracy. How far can I hit a prairie dog at? Being out there on the Prairie in the wind and sun all day, was something I’ll never forget. It was very cool when we made a hit at 400+ yards, holding 3 feet to the right because of wind and 2 feet over the top because of drop. It was very cool.

It’s a hunting forum. Why can’t we pop varmint? A pest? Why can’t we say wow look at this cool shot I just made? Without someone having to be offended.

And help me understand why you would want to read them? And then feel the need to comment? What is your hope? What is your goal?

I just don’t understand.

I also think, if something takes your valuables, that makes them a thief to be eliminated. Yet, that does not give them human attributes. Its just putting a label on them. Sort of like saying that fox is stealing my chickens. It doesn’t make him a bad fox. He’s actually just doing his job.

Those who would “pass judgement”, will, it’s why they are commenting. It’s understood that they could choose not to comment, but it’s also their right to. So it’s best to ignore those particular posts and be more appreciative of those who understand or are like minded. Thread jacking? That’s just being rude and uncouth. While we have a loose fellowship here at AGN, it’s always best not to make bad assumptions of fellow members. You can’t know a man or woman simply by what they post.

It's all good, thick skin that is,more fps helps with that. I will comment when I think it helps.

Shoot to kill, that takes practice."Lights out".

It is a open forum, and all subjects can become muddled.

I person can be ,a varmint hunter,he can protect his stuff or just like killing varmints,it is his or her right to do so.

Taking pride in how you go about killing varmints should indicate you like to kill them dead.
