Tuning Intenseaty22's .177 WC...The Tuning Saga

As per the last thread, I picked up a second hand FX Wildcat in .177. Right off the bat it was shooting a shotgun pattern at 20 yards. All of that rant can be found here . So, it was time to Tune and Repair, or at least try. I have never tried to take apart a PCP, dark unknown territory to me. To @fx-usa credit, they have done a great job of posting the Masterclass. However, I only used these videos as a bit of a refresher course. @BigRagu came to the rescue. I will tell you what, this man knows his Wildcats inside and out. In the end, while the gun is not shooting to my standards, it is shooting much much better than it was before he intervened. If you need a Wildcat tuned, I would send him a PM for sure.

So, the FX regulator was creeping all over the place. That got promptly replaced with a Huma HP reg. All pertinent O-rings were changed. The liner was indexed and polished. I don't have before pictures, but the groups were at least 3 to 4 inches spread over 8 shots. I'm getting like 3/4" or less with an occasional flyer. We installed a small plenum at the end of the tube, but unfortunately it was leaking pretty bad and had to remove it. I did get the leak a bit under control by using a bit of teflon, but did not get desired results at the time by using it. I removed it as it still had a small leak.

I intend to work on it a little more. Thinking about installing a gauge on the side to monitor the regulator pressure. If/when I can get a plenum that is working to spec, I may go ahead and try that again. The other thing that I am hoping for is that FX finally releases the much talked about Superior liner, and that it actually. works.

10-11-20: OK, Delta has been keeping us in the South rather moist, but I did not let that stop me from doing what I could. As noted above, I took gun apart, yet again sigh..., re-installed the plenum, up'd the reg to 120, and opened up the TP a bit. Right off the bat I had to remove the plenum again, huge fail as noted previously, it leaks all over the place no matter what I do. So, plenum removed, everything else as noted. Filled gun and did some shooting this fine morning through the rain. Looking way better.

10-13-20: shooting session after the last fairly happy one....is a bust! So, gonna give this a go and see. Should be dry by tomorrow. Also backed down the reg to 110, I think the hammer spring isn’t strong enough for 120 as speeds suffered.

To be continued....

my Wildcat Mk2 also needed some TLC to shoot accurately. It started with the reg creep (50 FPS ES) so I sent to it to FX and got it back 3 months later. A month later it lost velocity so I went to AOA for help (this was right before their split) they got it shooting again but reg creep came back a few weeks later. Switch to a Huma reg and messed with the hammer a bit now it’s shooting flawlessly with the 10.34s at 890-900 FPS with a spread of 15-20 FPS. I tried to shoot the monsters RD too but they only shot well at about low velocities like 820 FPS anything higher than that I got flyers.

Intenseaty, in reference to your original post and this current one I would like to to tell you my experience with the FX and .177 caliber.

After reading your thorough description of your problem I was concerned about the accuracy and dependability of shooting .177 pellets in my FX Crown. The Crown is in a laminate stock that came in .22 cal. I recently ordered, and received a .177 barrel kit for this rifle from Pyramid Air. I was looking forward to installing this kit and shooting .177 pellets in the near future. However, your comments (and others) indicating that the .177 from FX was a crap shoot at best and proclaimed "hit or miss" by an FX technician had me worried. Your bad shot groups with your MK and claims of the same from others (concerning that caliber) really had me concerned about my recent purchase.

So, instead of waiting I swapped out the .22 barrel and installed the .177 barrel kit (liner, barrel, probe and included moderator - 500 mm barrel) on my Crown last night after reading about the poor performance you experienced with this caliber. I mounted a scope, leveled and sighted it in my garage and was ready to test it today.

As it happened, other things got in the way so I couldn't shoot it until late this afternoon in the waning light. Without much time, I set up a target at 35 yds. and proceeded to shoot from my bench after zeroing my scope (about 5 shots). Since I didn't have much time with the fading light conditions I could only get off a few groups, which are in the following pic.

I was shooting JSB Exact 10.34's at 970 fps for the first two groups and RWS Supermags 9.3gr wad cutters for the third group at 790 fps for comparison. The three groups you see below are the results.

20201008_171057.1602222392.jpg

The first group, in the red diamond on the left, is a 10 shot group of the 10.34's. It measured .315 in. ctc.

The second group in the upper center is a 7 shot group with the 10.34's measuring .309 in. ctc. I shot 7 because, as you can see, I pulled one to the shot to the right and a wind gust took the one to the upper left. My measurement does not include those two shots as they were anomalies, not the fault of the gun. But, for reference that entire group measured .325 in.

The third group on the right is a 5 shot group with the 9.3 wad cutters with a .151 in. ctc. The squares are 1x1 inch.

As you can see I must have won the barrel lottery. This barrel was straight from the box, didn't have time to clean it as I wanted to see how bad my .177 experience was going to be before the sun went down. The hammer wheel was set to Max, the power wheel set to .177/.22, and the reg was set to 120, newly filled 250 Bar in the bottle. The liner was Super Twist X, not Superior.

First, I am more than satisfied with these results with a barrel right out of the box. I was completely surprised at how well the wad cutters performed in that tight group at that distance. Wad cutters are notorious for losing accuracy after about 27 yards. All groups are more than adequate for my first outing with the new barrel. I am sure I can tighten them up with some more practice.

This certainly indicates a problem with your gun which could be barrel related. Certainly so after you have made the necessary changes to just about every other part of the rifle. All I can say is, in my limited experience with the FX in .177, this caliber performs excellently. I have no doubt that there are many FX's shooting the .177 pellet as well or better. The accuracy and consistency is spot on and is what has come to be expected from FX.

I am sorry that your exposure to this caliber has been so disappointing. I hope you can work your issues out and get it shooting as well as this one. Best of luck to you, and keep us informed as your saga continues.

That’s fantastic! I would be more than satisfied with your worst group at 25 yards all day long & twice on Sunday. I will keep working the gun, but will not make any further expensive tuning until the Superior becomes available. Was hoping to have an answer from @fx-usa , but nothing yet. Will most certainly keep posting, my goal here is to learn & hopefully get my gun shooting straight. If it doesn’t rain tomorrow, I may post some groups.

You may find that the CF tubing mod, or trying more O rings may bring it around..

My .177 500MM STX pellet liner in my crown did not settle down until I used an even dozen O rings on it.

I used oversized O rings, stacked them on a piece of 1/4 inch rod which got stuck in the drill press, and then sanded the OD down to a snug fit in the barrel sleeve with a bit of silicone grease. I also used wraps of tape on the liner to keep the rings in place and spaced evenly every couple of inches.

This did away with the random stray shots with the JSB old design monsters, and left the occasional errant shot directly attributable to my lack of follow through or shifting the rifle while pulling the shot.

Cheap, relatively easy, and may help..........

After looking at your other thread, it seems you got it shooting good with both JSB monsters, and the H&N, except for the JSB heavys. I have 3 FX rifles with .177 caliber kits, and they all like JSB 10.34. Maybe it is your batch of of JSB heavys which are undersized, as it did happen to me once? Have you tried borrowed and tested a different batch?

@tor47 Gun is back to shooting like 💩 today. Even the “good ammo” I have tried only with the Hades in that shape/weight, no good. These may be AirArms variety, which incidentally, shoot exceptionally well out of my Springers. I am pretty sure I have other batches around myself. Will look and try. The only consistent thing about this gun is it’s inconsistency.
