Initial observations using FX Radar Chrono at outdoor shooting range today

Hey gang,

I was out this morning with the new FX Radar Portable Chrono and my Daystate Huntsman Regal XL in .22 caliber at my local outdoor shooting range. I just had my Regal recently tuned by Motorhead Tuning Services ( Scott ); and I am confident the gun is shooting very accurately with the new HUMA and all his mods.

This was my 'first' experience with set up and trying various positions and placements for optimum results using the Chrono. I have been reading a bunch of other posts and YouTube videos about using this Chrono, and I know opinions are "mixed" with likes and dislikes about trying out the new Chrono. This is my first Chrono so take everything with a grain of salt.

I spent about three hours at the range today shooting at both 25 and 50 yards with JSB 15.89, JSB 18.1 and Air Arms 16g pellets. I did lube all pellets, but I did not wash or sort them before using. Shot approximately 25 groups in total using all three brands of ammo above. There was some wind and I guessed about 3-5 mph and it settled down occasionally.

My goal today was more to "try out" the new Chrono and learn about the new device in terms of placement, proper height and positions. I experimented with height and placement along and in front of the DF Sumo LDC at the end of the Regal. I also changed the returns a few times from the default of 20%, but really did not come to any conclusions and need more experimentation here.

The Chrono 10 shot readings for the JSB 15.89 were averaging in the 850 FPS range with a variety of ES readouts for various shot groups. i.e., ES of 24, ES of 12, ES of 21, ES of 11. These were some solid 5-shot groups at 50 yards, but nothing spectacular. CTC average group size ranged from about 1/2 - 1" for the JSB 15.89.

The Chrono 10 shot readings for the JSB 18.1 were averaging 805 FPS with a variety of ES readouts for various shot groups. i.e., ES of 16, ES of 17, ES of 19. CTC average size again ranged between 3/8 " to 1 inch groups.

The Chrono shot readings for the Air Arms 16 grain were a pleasant surprise with the Regal. Had not shot this ammo before and I was surprised at the ES readings. i.e., ES of 5, ES of 7, ES of 9 for a total of (3) 5-shot groups at 50 yards. Had one group less than 1/2" CTC, and two that were between 3/4 and 1 inch. Interesting that the ES improved quite significantly downward from the JSB 15.89 and 18.1, but the CTC sizes did NOT reflect anything spectacular either.

FX Radar placement - I tried various heights and positions along the LDC and slightly in front of the LDC, and it appears to me that the optimum height is approximately 1-2 inches below the LDC and about 1-2 inches in front of the end of the LDC. In other words, 1-2 inches beyond the Sumo. Also, you need to make sure the Chrono is directly under the -center of the barrel. So, if you are using a Bi-pod and a back rest, you will "accidentally" move your gun slightly from time to time and you might be changing the placement of the muzzle or LDC in relationship to the Chrono. When I had this set up, it appears there was more consistency with the accuracy and I used the default return setting of 20%. I did notice from time to time, the Unit would NOT record a shot within a particular group. Happened about 6 different times, but it may have been me moving the gun slightly or just the unit itself.

All in all, I was pleased with the new unit. However, I would agree with others who have already replied about having some unusual and unexpected errors with this unit. Chrono placement is critical and you need to experiment with your air gun in terms of optimum height and positioning. I especially liked the portability of the unit, the easy set up on the new Manfrotto Tripod and how quickly you can begin shooting once you "know" the right height and placement!

Also, Centercut (Mike) mentioned this in his post, but I agree with him that you probably need to have a "trusted Chrono that you personally know is accurate and valid" as your primary Chrono. I think the kinks still need to be worked out on this Chrono and hopefully they will come out with a new and better application for iPhone or Android in the near term future.

I would welcome others' feedback on their experiences with the FX Radar Chrono, especially if that same feedback has not already been duplicated in several other posts.

Just ordered the new FX Radar Cradle from Aigunology UK.

So far, $199 for Chrono, another $40 for Manfrotto Tripod ( that Palm Beach Airguns suggested I purchase); and $33 USD for the anticipated cradle. Apparently there are 31 ( with my order today ) pre-orders ahead of me on the list of back orders. They are waiting for tripod screws and anticipate shipping in 2-3 weeks.

If it keeps going with buying more add on's to make it work, the Lab Radar is going to start looking easier for me to justify. Lol.

In the interest in sharing more knowledge and experience with the FX Radar Chrono..

Was out at the outdoor range this morning with an Anschutz .22 LR ( yes, I know this is an air gun forum so bear with me) and I was just curious to see how the Chrono would handle the 64 MPR vs. an air gun at lower FPS. My first post was with the Daystate Huntsman Regal so I wanted to see how it would do with a Rimfire.

Shooting at 52 yards in light wind with 40 g Center-X and RWS Special Match only, FPS was around 1090-1110 range. ES ranges were anywhere from 20-35, which was disappointing although I had some pretty good groups.

Again, had many issues with placement of Chrono and it was "extremely" sensitive to any slight movements from shot to shot with back rest bag and front Harris Bi-pod. Just when I thought I had it dialed in, a shot would not register and I had to move the gun back and forth with the Chrono. I am curious if the Chrono is even much more sensitive to the higher FPS of the Anschutz.

I really can't wait to try out the new Cradle when it arrives hopefully in a couple of weeks.

Guys, I am back with a new update!

I went to the local outdoor range today and had very successful results with the new FX Radar Cradle from Airgunology, UK. I was delighted to finally to get it working as I think it should be, at least in my experience based on today.

I used Velcro ( but, I would almost prefer using the rubber bands that come with the cradle next time I am out) to secure the Chrono to my DF Sumo on the DS Regal .22. I shot groups at 25 and 50 yards using JSB 15.89 ( Average is 850 fps with ES ranges less than 20, several less than 10 ). Shot the JSB 18.1 (Average at 805 fps with ES ranges 10-15 approximately) . I also shot the Air Arms Diabolo 16 grain which were very impressive in terms of both groups and ES numbers. Several groups with ES less than 10, which surprised me. Not one missed unrecorded shot with the new set up. Had the cradle and Chrono about 4 inches below the LDC, and hanging a bit loose underneath the LDC. I know the Chrono was pretty darn accurate because this is where Scott ( Motorhead Tuning Services ) tuned my HUMA Regulated Regal a couple of months ago.

I can post pics on targets and groups but suffice it to say at 50 yards, I shot with a range of groups between 1/4" (one group) to a little over an inch, with most averaging 3/4" Candidly, the Regal HUMA tuned gun is shooting about as good as I can get it to shoot at 50 yards. Not sure I can ever really expect consistent 1/4" groups, nor can I expect consistent ONE hole groups with this gun at 50 yards. At 25-40 yards much tighter and look out squirrels!

Here are some pics from Steve Allan that he sent me today, that depict how you use the rubber bands with the cradle.

"Had the cradle and Chrono about 4 inches below the LDC, and hanging a bit loose underneath the LDC."

My bad here, sorry.

I meant to say that I had the cradle and Chrono about 4 inches BEHIND the end of the LDC muzzle, not 4 inches BELOW it. Actually, the Chrono is probably about 1/2 inch below the LDC, maybe even closer. I heard that guns are all different and you have to experiment with height and distance, but once you dial it in, it works well!

Hi all,

Steve (aka |Catanonia) who is the guy that runs Airgunology YouTube.

It is great to see people are happy with the FX Cradle we put together through demand and constant emails asking me to make available a 3D printed solution.

It has been hectic and we have sold over 75 cradles in 3 weeks worldwide.

Some answers for you.

1. Cost - The cost covers shipping worldwide, 3D printer filament and time, along with a little bit of profit for me (about 25%)

2. Design - This is what we came up with and I have had 2 emails out of 75 saying it could have been done better. Yes it can be, but we wanted a universal fit, the chrono the right way up (some people don't trust it upside down, weird I know) and robust as 3D prints can be. Of course you can always design your own or tape it to your barrel as some have done. We just offer a simple option.

As for the FX chrono, here are my thoughts.

1. I personally don't trust it as it is so reliant on positioning and who knows what position is the ACCURATE reading position or if it is pot luck. For us in the UK with a 12ft/lb limit, this is a major flaw.

2. It has a calibration setting in the app. WTF ? What the crap would I calibrate it against. A chrono that actually works

3. Beta testing for $200 - Yeah right. The app is pants.

BUT

Those that like it and have one, we offer the cradle to help them use it.

Anyways, thanks for all those that have contacted me and if want to look at it, see airgunology.com where details are (I won't directly post the page link)

Just an update to this thread.

FX USA in North Carolina does have an FX cradle that (for me) actually works better than the Airgunology Cradle. They are both quite good, but just wanted you all to be aware that they do have them. Cheap, but can't recall the exact price I paid. Call them if you want one.

I use my FX Radar all the time at the range and am very happy with it for what I need!
