Inconsistent POI...

Funny enough, someone else posted a similar question in the PCP section... Anyhow.

My GAMO Whisper Fusion Pro shoots fine for the first 10 shots after each time I Zero my scope. After that, it is way off and I have to do it all over again. Thinking it was the cheap scope, I went to Walmart and bought another cheap scope, ha ha. A CenterPoint for $69 bucks. The reviews, and the guy that sold it to me, said it was great. Anyhow, I am having the same issue with the new scope as well. This makes no sense to me!

After reading the above mentioned thread, I decided to take a closer look at my rifle. All screws are tight and secured with Loctite. The only ones that I did not use Loctite on are the one that hold the scope down and prevent it from turning. I would thing that being off the the right has nothing to do with the scope having turned. It does not turn, I am just saying...

Having said all of that, here is what I noticed after taking a second look at the gun. The barrel seems to not lock 100% in place. I mean, it does lock in place, but there is a tiny bit of play that makes the barrel have two positions when fully cocked and loaded. I am able to put a little bit of force on the tip of the barrel and make it come down by 1 - 1.5mm?! That cannot be normal, right? Can someone check their break barrel and see if theirs is doing the same?

Now. I can see the pellet being of in the vertical plane, but not to the side. Maybe I am wrong...

Thanks,

Kmd

I just checked my Beeman R9 and the barrel does move a tiny bit up and down. It's shooting great! If the gun has open sights, see if you can get it to group without the scope. The scope and mounts could also be sliding rearward on the receiver, put a piece of tape or make a pencil mark on the gun in front of the mount, shoot it and see if a gap opens up between the mark and the mount. If the scope and mount are sliding try a mount with a stop pin, hopefully there's a hole in the receiver for a stop pin.

John,

I believe I found the problem. Actually, I am pretty sure that I found the problem. : )

I went to Big 5 Sporting Goods today since they carry the same rifle, and I wanted to check if theirs does the same. Fair enough, they had one on display. Even though theirs had the same play in the barrel, it wasn't as much as it is on my. For a comparison, I grabbed an Umarex Rifle and their construction seemed way sturdier than on the GAMO. Anyhow.

After stopping by at Big 5, I came home and read your post. It made me think and I started taking the whole scope rail apart. Guess what?! Right away the problem was eminent! Something is sliding around and is causing deep grooves in the rail. If that is not a sign, I am not sure what is, ha ha. This must the problem!

Take a look at the attacked picture and see for yourself!

I guess I am going to contact GAMO and see if they will send me a replacement rail. Once I get it, I will pay closer attention to the set screw marked as number 1 in the picture. It must have not been tight enough and/or not secured using Loctite.

Anyhow, thanks for helping me solve my problem!

Kmd1984,
That's definitely scope creep! From what I hear you may have trouble getting any parts from Gamo-let us know how that goes! You can probably still use your old rail-see if there's enough metal left to grab your stop pin. If there isn't you could flip your scope mount and use the pin in the front hole as long as the scope is still where it needs to be for a clear sight picture. When you mount the scope run the stop pin out enough so it can grab the stop hole, finger tighten the mount screws and slide the mount back till you feel the pin hit the rear edge of the stop hole. Now tighten the mounting screws and run the pin all the way in till it's snug. This method should get the pin all the way back in the stop hole and should prevent the scope and mount sliding rearward.
Good luck,
John

John,

I am speechless to why I did not notice the scope "creeping" before? Unbelievable! It was right there and I didn't see it?! Anyhow. You are right again. I emailed GAMO and they said that this is not a Warranty issue, since the set screw has to be set by the user! That might be true, however, I never seen a company that stingy. Whatever.

I am using the mount and rail. This time everything should setup the way it would be. BTW, I totally got what you were saying and did exactly that!

We will see how it goes. Worst case scenario: I buy a new rail for $14.95 and a new set screw. Not sure how much the screw and shipping is, but it is not the end of the world, ha ha.

Thanks again!
