Impact Stackable Moderator vs Aftermarket?

I am positive the aftermarket moderators for the .22 Fx Impact such as the offerings from Donnyfl and Huggett make the impact quieter due to the sheer volume of photos I’ve seen with them installed on people’s guns - my questions are, how much quieter, which is best and is it really needed? Of course I know the answer is “it depends on the shooter and their conditions” however I’d like to know what your reasonings were for upgrading and what your real world results were.

Research with video comparisons and articles is definitely left wanting. It would be awesome to see multiple brands being compared to stock with a sound test like Steve does in his excellent AEAC videos, showing breakdown of components and results... although I don’t know if that would be a red flag for Uncle Sam or a ding on you tube.

This is a good question as most reviews are on the guns as they come from the factory, but not a gun with various configurations like Moderators. It's difficult for reviewers to do this type of review because the guns are sent by vendors, the review is done, and the gun usually sent back. The reviewers don't have the luxury of keeping the guns and trying different aftermarket parts, unless the reviewer is independently wealthy, and collects every gun that comes across their desk. We all know that isn't the case.

So, in this case, it really comes down to owners of Impacts that have replaced the stock moderator with a DonnyFL or Huggett to make the comparison. That's probably a pretty small group.

As for Uncle Sam, not too worried as airguns are not covered under the Firearms Act of 1934,so moderators are legal on airguns. As for YouTube, that's a completely different story. So unpredictable and inconsistent that anything on a gun channel is probably a risk.

So, any Impact owners made the change and have a comparison?

I have a .25 impact that I put the donnyfl sumo on. Made a noticeable difference in sound. The stock ldc works well and The guns can only get so quiet, i think with the sumo you are at that level. As far as poi change, the sumo dropped my poi about 1.5" at 50 yards. A few scope clicks and right back to pellet on pellet. Didn't notice and change in velocity

I chose the sumo because donny is small business as am I, I always like supporting the little guy over big business. But trust me quality in the product is incredible. It is a very nice piece and doesn't look out of place on a 2,000 dollar gun

I talked to Donny and he suggested that same moderator (sumo) to me. Nice to hear it made a difference. I wonder why the poi changed? But with a slight adjustment sounds like you’re back in business.

My moderators have really tight tolerances. By stripping the air around the pellet, you're changing airflow which results in POI. However, this will improve your accuracy because the air is more concentrated behind the pellet now. If you're worried about having to re-zero your scope every time you put on or remove the moderator, I would suggest going with the next size up. So if you're shooting a .22, go to a .25. Still very effective.

I originally put an FX stackable moderator on my .22 Streamline - 4 pieces total. I replaced that with a Weihrauch (HW) and found the HW to be noticeably quieter. The HW is a bit longer and has a bit more volume and it was less expensive than the 4 piece FX. If I had spent another $50 for a couple more FX sections, the 6 sections might have been comparible but I prefer the look of the HW anyway. Neither had any affect on POI. The stackable idea sounds good on paper but IMO, unnecessarily overcomplicated.

I use the Shogun currently on my Impact X .30 - Planning to get the Emperor really soon too.

The stock baffles ? stackable from FX give a hollow thud to the gun. This is because there is no dampening material to 1. assist in the deadening of rite sound and 2. absorb / slow down the air.

DonnyFL suppressors. - There aren't many videos on them from my searches. Internally they are normally higher volume, have a sound dampening material (felt in this case) and have a retaining baffle to assist in keeping the material out of the path of fire. There is a video of a person using a FOAM instead of the felt to quiet down the suppressor even more.

I planned on grabbing a sound meter to do some actual testing. Blind test with my friends and faIImily without seeing the source of the noise. I did the NO suppressor, FX stackable , then the DonnyFL Shogun - everyone immediately said the DonnyFL Shogun was quietest out of the 3 and I switched them up a couple times to verify.

This is on an FX Impact X .30cal.

I am never going to use my baffles from FX - So if someone wants to buy them, by all means, I'm ready to sell them. I need to come up with the ~$220 for the Emperor V2 from DonnyFL -

Unless someone wants to send me an Emperor V2 for testing with the sound meter. Or wants to meet up somewhere. I'm in St. Petersburg FL and willing to travel... I'd have the FX, Shogun, and Emperor all on hand at the same time.

Some of the relevant videos. Take into consideration that these people aren't using pellets through the barrel when shooting. That also has an effect on the sound level. Volume of the suppressor is the other.

I've watched those videos also before buying and one thing stands out he's NOT shooting any pellets. That does make a difference in sound levels. It much softer sounding while shooting. I use both the Sumo and Tanto when shooting my Prod ( not Impact) but it will reduce the sound on any AG. Donny makes very nice stuff and can take them apart for service unlike some others.

@n2stuff - Yeap - That always gets me when people are testing out things. If you aren't doing it right or in a manner that it would be used. The data would them be flawed and inaccurate or in this case, just wrong. You are correct. When the pellet passes through these, it is a completely different sound// or lack there of. as it passes through, it momentarily creates a wall that stops the air and you get a whistle almost of the pellet traveling out to its destination.

I’ve lined the stackable mod on my .25 Impact with 6mm foam held in place with some Aluminum grill and while I have no testing equipment it does seem quieter.
