Got a chronograph and started tuning this weekend. Sighted at 25, and had a 2.5 mil holdover at 100 y. Here were the settings with my best groups (1") at 100 yards:
Name: hammer 2.5, power A, reg 115
Shots: 36
Average: 889 FPS
SD: 6 FPS
Min: 879 FPSMax: 899 FPS
Spread: 20 FPS
Power Factor Average: 16
Power Factor Low: 16
Power Factor High: 16
Weight: 18.1 grains
Afterwards, I always run through a holdover test (from 5-100y) to confirm with StrelokPro reticle calculator (so I can make a cheat sheet like the one below that I memorize holdover values from).
Right when I got finished and was ready to head inside from the back porch, my 6 year old who was walking around the corner to pee runs over screaming he saw a snake. Snakes are the reason (read justification) I used for buying a gun with the accuracy of an impact. So, I turned the power to min - I was forced to shoot towards my house and between my hot tub and electrical. Holdover values fresh in my head, at 5 y away, I holdover 10mil and shot this guy in the head... the next 17 shots were for fun letting my boys have a go. Crisis averted.
Yeah - I know what you're thinking. You don't need to buy a 2k gun to shoot anything at 5 yards...and you're right... but I looked good doing it! Ha! Not to mention the ability to turn down the power settings means the ricochet didn't have enough power to damage anything nearby (but still, my 100$ springer could have made that shot).
So while we often talk about holdovers for long distance and windage - sometimes it's the holdovers for short distance that are more important. And there's the lesson boys and girls.
