Impact, help me resist...

Greetings,

I've been out of airguns for a few years, and recently decided to get back into them. Naturally I sold off everything I had, so I'm pretty much starting over. The last rifle I had was an Evanix Max ML in 9mm/.357, and it was nice, but loud and heavy. I definitely want to stay with bullpups, and won't even consider long rifles.

As I looked through the options available now, I stumbled across the FX Impact, and it's just EXACTLY what I want (regulated, adjustable, multi-caliber). I was so excited until I looked at the price!!! The price is sort of a gift that keeps on giving too, since barrels (for an additional caliber) are $440, spare tanks are over $300 I think, and even a magazine is $80 which is just staggering. As much as I like the rifle, it's really hard to justify paying that much for one.

The Wildcat is pretty nice as well, and a bit cheaper, but still pretty pricey. What else should I be looking at? I'd probably get .22 and .30 (corrected mistake) as the barrel choices if I got an Impact, but I might settle on .22 or .25 for a single caliber. It would be or target shooting, and very occasional pest control.

Thanks,
Rusty

There aren't many factory regulated bullpups that are cheaper than the Wildcat.

There are a few that are a little cheaper though. The obvious one for cheaper Impact-like gun is the The Priest. They are new so I honestly don't know if they are worth buy yet but if you can tolerate the new gun risk then it's worth a look.

There is also the Taipan Mutant. I have one and they are excellent and light.

For an even cheaper option there is the JKhan bullpups and WildWest offer a regulator upgrade option.

The other decent options go up in price from the Wildcat.

Thanks for the suggestions. I've spent a few minutes looking into them, and mainly I think I'd be interested in The Priest. It does seem to have similar features to the Impact, but I would probably be worried about how new it is, and the fact that it appears to be their first air rifle product. Of course every company has a first product, and it's not necessarily anything to be worried about. I'll likely do some more research on The Priest.

Cheers,
Rusty

I have a Priest in .25 and I am really enjoying the rifle. There ins't any real easy adjustments but the gun is set up well from the factory. I would say that the Priest is a gun that requires a bit of break in. Cocking is very stiff at first. It gets much better after about a tin of pellets. I have a couple tins of kings through mine at this point and a straight shooters assortment I have played with. So long as you stay within JSB, HN, and Beeman Kodiaks I think you'll find acceptable accuracy. I can go on for a long time about what I like about the gun, what I want to experiment with, and much more. I will say that for the price, it is a fantasitic gun for someone who wants to hunt. Probabaly not the best paper puncher but it is a great one. At 100yards I have not had a group worse than 3.5 inches. If you find the 0033 review you'll see pictures and that was my first and worst 100 yard outing with the gun. I have played with the gun quite a bit since and I can say with confidence that I would buy it again. It has proven itself effective for my needs. I like to hunt. It works for that role, I killed several quarrry at this point. Also I think there is quite a bit of potential waiting to be tapped.

I have been eyeballing the Cricket, Impact, and ultimately I bought the Priest and something tells me in the hands of an average shooter all of these will group very similarly in .25. Sure some will do better and there are a lot of factors in play. If you want help resisting the Impact, consider any of the other guns I have mentioned, including the wildcat. Depending on what you really want you may find a better option and who knows, you may pay up to $770 less.

Only thing you must keep in mind is if you buy a Priest they offer a high power bottle(150bar) and a low power bottle(125bar). If you got a .30 barrel as well you would need a tank with the HP reg as the .22 will ship with a LP tank. That tank and reg should be around $150 per Matt at RL. They setup the washers in the reg to get the output.

I am starting to feel like I am rambling so if you have any specific questions about the Priest I can likely answer them. Regardless of what you pick I hope you enjoy it.

Thanks very much for the reply, and for the excellent info you've shared about the Priest in other threads. After reading through all of those threads, plus other reviews, I think it might be too early in their product cycle for me to jump on one of these. I think I'd be more comfortable waiting 6 months or a year until they have a lot more user experience, and we can see how well they're holding up.

I've done a bit more soul searching about what I'd really use this for, and it will realistically be 99% for punching paper and ringing steel. I'm just looking for something as accurate as possible to shoot in a rural back yard. If I buy an Impact, it would be in .22 for the shorter length, high shot count, and reduced noise over larger bores. That would be plenty to deal with the odd squirrel or bird that might become a pest. It would be hard to justify the cost of an extra .30 cal barrel/mags for larger pest control, since I have suppressed .22, and .300 blackout rifles to handle those more effectively.

I do like the Wildcat, but I still like the Impulse more. I also know myself, and know that I'll likely end up with an Impulse eventually, even if I buy something else now. I'm almost ready to use the old "buy once cry once" philosophy to justify the Impulse. About the only alternate plan I can think of now is to start with something cheap, like the Kral Puncher Breaker (worst name every), then watch the Priest development.

Thanks for all the comments.

Just my $.02 but I don't think an impact is a good buy unless you have a very high level of understanding about airgun tuning and you have multiple roles to fill with one gun. It comes at the cost of a gun that has higher maintenance needs.

I wanted the priest because I wanted a hunter. I didn't want to concern myself with trying to keep it pretty cosmetically. Based on what you want I personally would fear the Impact as a buy once cry one. I think it is very much akin to buying a high end car. It performs great when it is running but when it needs repairs a great deal of more crying is likely to happen. No gun has been completely without its faults but the wildcat, cricket, mutant standard doesn't seem to have many people crying over them. If you want a solid platform above all else I'd look at them. They fit the bill you want in high shot count, accurate, and low noise.

More expensive doesn't directly translate into better. When you do buy something fill us in on how you're liking it.

Impacts are ugly. Does that help you resist?

Others to consider:
  • FX Bobcat (has adjustable power, on the fly)
  • Air Arms Galahad
  • Edgun Matador (best-looking bullpup, IMO)
  • Taipan Mutant (best value bullpup)
  • Calibrgun Cricket (quietest)
  • Daystate Renegade
As for the caliber, go with a .25 and split the difference.

Then, get a .177 HW30s for plinking and target shooting. (and saving money on lead)

OK, some of you are being just a bit too helpful :) It will take all the spare time I have for the next week to do a more thorough search for info on all the the rifles mentioned, but I'll give it a go.

I really should take a closer look at the Mutant, and I will be. The Wildcat is still on the table as well, but the Impact is still at the top of my list. One of the things I still really like about the Impact is all the various adjustments you can make. I'd bet 90% of all my shooting with firearms is done to test various powders, charge weights, bullets, etc, so that's something I enjoy. I'm sure many adjustments can be made with other rifles, but not as easily as just turning the knobs on the Impact.

Research continues. Thanks!

Chicks seem to dig the looks of the Impact.

Maybe that's incentive.

On a more serious note, my Impact had an o-ring problem which was my fault....set reg. too high and once I got the cheap-o o-ring fix under the barrel hold down knob, this rifle has really become a very nice, accurate shooter.

I also have a Cricket in .25 which I'd say would also be a fine choice. Accurate as all get out. I have not tried the Vulcan, Priest, Mutant or Wildcat so......you should check those out. Good luck and have fun with your hunt.

If it is for 22 cal quiet backyard use and mainly paper punching, I would push the Mutant to the top of the list of compact options.

I have a lot of PCP guns but my Mutant is the one I reach for if I want a relaxing backyard shooting experience that won't annoy my wife or the neighbors. Mine came very accurate out of the box. Most other people here seem to have had the same experience.

I am not someone who laughs out loud for no reason but I giggled like a schoolgirl the first time I heard how quiet it was and that was without buying any additional shroud extensions. If you get it from WildWest, they sell an additional (and inexpensive) shroud extension for the Mutant which makes it the quietest 22 cal airgun on the planet imo. Not that it needs it.

If I could only own one airgun and I had to give up all my others, I would keep my Mutant.

My Mutant is the Shorty which is the most compact bullpup I know of at under 23" long and a little over 6lb. I consider it to be the ultimate backyard plinker and light hunter / woodswalker gun.

Thanks for the additional comments. I looked seriously at the Mutant and Priest, but knew I would end up with the Impact anyway, so I just decided to go for it. This morning I received confirmation of my $200 refundable deposit for the next batch of Impact rifles from AOA, around the end of Feb or first of Mar. With any luck my wife won't read that part about chicks digging it, but she knows they wouldn't dig it enough to be willing to take me as part of the package :)

Thanks,
Rusty
