Impact, ground squirrels and slugs

Today I took a solo trip to two of my ground squirrel permissions in N.E. Oregon. The weather was 45-50*, mostly overcast and very windy so most of the squirrels were underground with their babies. I shot out of the drivers seat of my truck using the window sill as rest and a very loosely shouldered gun and looking at the camera video screen. Even with the conditions and less than stable rest I lucked out going 7 for 7 with ranges to 91 yards. I think I ranged the 91 yard hill inaccurately, dialed in too much elevation and hit both higher that I was aiming (one squirrel right in top of the head and the other a high chest shot). In another month the weather will be warmer, the babies will be teenagers and the shooting will be orders of magnitude greater. Can't wait. And I can go with friends. It was pretty lonely today with nobody for miles around.

If you watch the slo-mo portions you can see the yellow slug bases in flight.

What are your thoughts on the griffen slugs? I ordered some today and they came in. immense selection and styles. How is the quality? I also have a box of Seneca Slugs Hunting Pellet. But those are huge, dont fit in the magazine. 43.2 grain. .25 cal.

Great video. Ive never hunted before, it does not look easy. So far just getting into the sport and shooting at targets at my back yard. (not impressive, i know lol)

Rwgarval: the droplets of blood are how I found the squirrel. It really is amazing how they get back into a hole after having their switch turned off.

DrAngler: I really like the Griffin slugs. High quality, great selection, very fast shipping. Mike is a great guy to deal with. I tried about 30 different flavors from VN, Nielson, ASV, etc. and the Griffin shot the best for me.

I think I'll try to find a hot pink paint marker as the yellow color doesn't pop against the dead weeds and grass.

I want to make some exploding slugs from cap gun powder. I made some exploding HP pellets a few years back and the popped pretty good hitting a wet phone book.

Been shooting the ground squirrels for 3 weeks all days except rain and some short days because of wind. It is amazing how tuff these squirrels are. Boiler room hit and they will go a 100 feet bleeding out or head shot through eyes, yesterday, ran maybe 200 foot total doing a 25 foot diameter circle then a 100 foot semicircular route before expiring. Many making it back to their holes after taking a pass though hit folding them in half. Have not tried slugs as both the 18.13 and Hades are getting pass throughs at longer ranges. Strange thing I have noticed is a pass through and pellet will hit a couple feet behind off the side with a blueish spray and I think I missed then flopping around.

Lenweber that’s my experience too, for many years I’ve used pellets and 70% of the time the squirrels manage to get to their holes, even with a perfect shot placement, indeed there are tough critters but now thanks to NSA I haven’t had any runners since i tried his slugs, most of the squirrels i shot didn’t present an exit hole and with the pass through ones I had the same results, the squirrels didn’t twitch, the slugs are dumping so much energy and leaving some much damage before they exit. I love shooting pellets but my go to type of ammo for zombie squirrels are slugs. Good shooting everyone!
