If your accuracy decreases and you wonder why....

Especially true if you shoot unlubed slugs!

Yep, I would say that at least 90% of the time, a loss of accuracy in my rifles has been due to a dirty barrel. And there is no consistency to the performance of different barrels. My FX Royale 400, which is the original solid, ST barrel, virtually never needs cleaning. My Red Wolf and RAW, although I don't keep track, probably lose some accuracy after 100 or so pellets. I have gone back to using lubed pellets. I can't quantify the effect, but I'm pretty sure it helps a bit.

It's the dirty little secret about shooting slugs that nobody really talks about.

While you could get away from cleaning your barrel when just using pellets.

You have to keep your barrel clean if you're using slugs, and should really be using some form of lube on them.

Adds a little to the maintenance or preparation time, but I like it, allows me to spend more time with my guns, because before I only cleaned my barrels if something funky was happening and poi was off. First step clean barrel kind of thing.

Don't know what you're using, but recently I switched over to this, and cleaning couldn't get any easier. I had made my own weed eater and patch set up, but it is not as effective.

That was an AEA HP Varmint which shoots NSA slugs quite well. The group's, surprisingly only opened up a little. I've been experimenting with a few different lubes people mentioned. Can't recommend WD40 silicone spray. It gunked up my mags causing them to seize in the cold.

This is a very good reminder topic. I shoot lubed slugs out of a nicely polished barrel. Every 30-50 I pull a couple dry patches through. First one black then the next two are almost white then white. This morning I was shooting and the gun was just not consistent. Pulled 4 or 5 patches with solvent on them through and they were black. The solvent patches showed me how dirty my gun really was. Can’t wait to see if my gun has returned to normal. Sometimes we get a little complacent even when we know better.
