If you want to shoot ground squirrels, get a Squirrel Call

First time in 3 weeks I was able to make it over to the pecan farm. It has been dadgum hot and I did not expect to see many, if any ground squirrels. At 8:30 a.m. it was climbing past 85 degrees.

I missed the first shot (I pulled the trigger with my whole arm, rather than the finger tip - it has been a while, remember?). The next 8 shots were good for 7 crunches. It was a day of doubles and a tripple. I would pull up to a brush pile, shut off the atv and wait for about 60 seconds before I started the squirrel distress call. Like magic, Squirrels would pop up like they were spring loaded. Pop- crunch, pop-crunch. Wahoo! What a fun day. I lost count around 25-26 take downs. I am not at the level of Hajimoto, nor Bob_O, but the action was hot and heavy.

The farmer stopped by to talk a bit, and watched me hit a skull/ear shot at a decent range. He is happy with the work we have put in and has asked us to keep putting the smack on his over supply of rodents. Ok, I know I still need to get a side shot camera adaptor. The only photo I took...

I have an GOSKY digi scope adaptor that will hold my phone for scope videos, however, it is really clumsy to aim and shoot with. May be better on a standard gun, and definitely easier to aim from the bench. I am shooting off hand or braced over the ATV handle bars. I would fall over if I tried to digi scope while hunting with that adaptor.

Oh, and I will send the GOSKY to any member of AGN simply for the asking (I would not say no to an offer to pay postage...) . I am not using it and someone else will.

I just found that my phone will not video and play the calls at the same time. I will document the area and the responses next time I go. The plus side is that when I turn on the video, the call stops... Which will help me know that the tape is rolling, and after a while, you will not want to hear the call squawking in the back ground anyway.

Thanks for the tip. I'm very new to this, but the whole reason I'm interested in airguns is to deal with ground squirrels. It looks like there are only 4 or 5 different calls. Are they likely to work on the ground squirrels we have in CA, or are calls species-dependent?

A call will not make a ground squirrel come to you. When they have run into a burrow, a call can make them pop their head back out or if they are on all fours, the call can make them stand up, giving you a better shot. Here's the call I use when I shoot ground squirrels. I like it because it keeps your hands free. Give it a couple squeaks and be ready to shoot. This call works more often than not. Good luck

For my local nut rats, the grey squirrel sounds seems to work better than the red squirrel sounds. I have only been at this game for about 2.5 months . I have a lot more to learn.

.rock Squirrel is not early morning active, and they won't come out when it is very hot. ~9:00-1:00pm has been my most successful times, and right before a rain shower.

Good luck to ya and post up on the forum what works for you. We all learn together.

Shoot'em good.

Got the sideshot in and after an extended session of trial and error and error and trial, I got the results I want (I think...)

The proof of the pudding is in the eating, so stand by for another thread, this time with video.

My last trip out was a bust, just so to keep the score sheet honest. I slept too late and did not hit the farm until 1600, and it was 97 degrees and very humid - must have been a whole 28% RH. I begin to understand that the Squirrels don't like the heat, much. Can't blame them. Day time temps are a big part of why I work nights.

Stay tuned
