Here are FX's answers to your questions

"lbeckwith"Q: Any idea when it will start shipping?
A: AoA recently received their first shipment and will start shipping them shortly.

I just spoke with AOA, and they denied having received their first shipment. Indicated they thought it MIGHT be beginning of November.
Thats too funny! They don't want to receive hundred calls till they have them all checked out, but what do I know....

Is it true that the shroud on the .25 does nothing to suppress the report?
Has anyone fired a .25 with and without the shroud to test it?

The reason I ask is due to the Australian Gov't banning the imports of guns with shrouds due to sound moderators/Suppressors being illegal here in Oz. So Anything that comes into the country that by default has a shroud that isn't integral to the operation (ie. Semi autos that use extra air to cycle the next shot)., is removed by customs and sold without a shroud.

It happened because of the western Australian State government interpreted the Suppression law differently to every other state. So customs just said no more. You can still buy pre-ban guns that have the shrouds, but anything that came in after a certain date isn't allowed to have anything that lowers the report of the gun.

We have have shrouds, they just can't lower the report. They are sold as Barrel supports. http://www.sportingguns.com.au/fx-air-rifles-/298-hsg-barrel-support.html

My Marauder has a carbon fiber shroud, but instead of porting the air back into the shroud, it ports it forward and away from the pellets path with an in built muzzle brake.

we were never allowed to have baffles though, as they were/are classified as a suppressor.

It's a stupid law, and every stated interpreted it differently, hence customs just saying no more.

I guess noise pollution is only an issue with cars and trucks right?

Not that it matters but I doubt you will find anyone that has fired their Wildcat without the shroud since it's bonded in place and not meant to be taken off. One doesn't need to take the shroud of to see if the rifle will be louder. I can tell you the answer: OH HECK YEAH is will be much louder.

How do I know? Experience and common sense. I have owned quite a few rifles that have had both a shroud and moderator. All of them would cracks like a center fire rifle when I removed the moderator and left just the shroud behind. I took the baffles off my Wildcat and fired it many times. It was very loud. The baffles kill about 98% of rifle's report. That is their sole function. I realize their are some rifles that have shrouds designed to provides suppression. Evanix builds in some noise suppression devices into their barrels but the effectiveness is debatable at best.

The shroud on the Wildcat is much less about sound suppression and more about overall functionality. For example, some of it's functions include:
  1. Keeping the crown of the barrel from getting damaged
  2. Protecting the barrel's surface from dings, scratches, etc.
  3. Keeping the barrel from getting pinched against the air cylinder
  4. Providing a threaded interface necessary for installing the modular baffles
  5. Provides weight to maintain the rifle's balance, handling, and feel. Heck it probably minimizes muzzle flip as well.
    [/LIST=1]
Now I don't know for certain but I would imagine may serve as a dampening/attenuation component to keep the barrel harmonics in check. Heck it will certainly prevent knuckle heads from getting the skin on their hands and fingers bonded to the surface of the barrel when shooting in freezing temperatures :)

That's all I can think of at the moment. The list may grow.

Our laws are based on Bureaucrats trying to appease minorities SuburbanMe.Some stuff does seem to get through though. The Gamo Whisper is reasonably quiet for a springer with the plastic end on. I don't attract neighbors when clearing Indian Mynahs. I'm now searching for a PCP and I can buy a new FX Monsoon(old shipment) with the shroud.Unfortunately I also want to try a .25 so a Royale 500 is my preference. BUT, no moderators. So the mynahs may be safe for a while.
How loud is a .25,Either in comparison to say .22 rimfire or in dB rating. Can anyone tell me.
Thanks Paul.
