I think I need therapy!

I find myself in love and my neighbors are pissed! I will try to be succinct so a little understanding please. The next-door neighbor had 11 cats and two dogs. Add to that the other roaming cats and our garden became fouled. I would pick up my AA Prosport and practice a slaughter never once pulling the trigger. Older and wiser but very frustrated. Tried every home remedy and Internet recommendation short of killing or trapping.

I noticed after awhile fewer and fewer felines about. Then one day SHE appeared sleeping lazily under the lemon tree 11.566 meters from my patio door. I had been presented with a savior. Cats were sitting on roofs all over the neighborhood. I could not even reach for a gun. The thought of harm coming to my Sweet was abhorrent.

I put out scraps and made sure she was not bothered during her weekly visits. The word got out that I was “harboring” this beast. I didn’t care. I loved her! Then she mistakenly, totally by accident, blamelessly, with no ill intent jumped the neighbor’s fence killed and ate their little yapper rat dog. That animal had no right to be out unattended and the owners were at fault. Correct?

I am being vilified, scorned and treated like a dirty shirt!

Do I need a new Matador, or Cricket, or or or a hug?

Nope your in deep doo doo it is illegal in most states to keep coyotes
Further you stated plainly that she jumped a neighbor's fence indicating your the one at fault as you have plainly stated that you have been feeding and harboring this animal.
How can YOU even TRY to put the blame on them???? They invested in a fence keeping their animals inside that fence while you purposely allowed an half wild animal to run around free
I will tell you plainly if I was that neighbor I would shoot that animal sue the hell out of you. And considering how I feel about MY babies you would count yourself lucky!

I have no clue if your in legal trouble but sounds like your neighborhood has a legit reason to be pissed at you. I'm interested in how the word got out that you are "harboring" him. Guessing you told someone??

I would suggest you stop feeding him, you've made it easy for someone to poison him. I don't blame one bit for liking him around. He already knows your place is a safe zone, so you don't need to feed him and you shouldn't teach him to associate food with humans.

I hope none none of your pissed of neighbors read this thread

At worst he is guilty of feeding wild life. You may have missed the part where his garden was getting crapped in by the cats.

As far as your "babies" are concerned, I trust you don't let them crap in the neighbor's garden? As far as a law suit is concerned, you'd be wasting your time.

He didn't allow a half wild animal to run around. He fed a wild animal and did not chase it away. It isn't his. It wasn't his. He probably should not have fed it. Either way it probably would have jumped that fence and killed that yapper. God forbid that anyone would let a wild animal run free, eh?

He gets a slap on the hand for feeding wildlife. That's it. The neighbors dog got eaten because the idiots that owned it were dumb enough to put it out unattended in Coyote country.

Good advice. Probably best not to tell the neighbors you fed the Coyote and probably best to stop feeding her and hope she figures out not to eat whatever the neighbors put out because if the neighbors are dumb enough to let their yapper get eaten by a Coyote they are dumb enough to set out poison. Sadly the world has become a place where the only recourse is law enforcement. There is a law against anything you do.

Well guys I understand where you are coming from but this was a 90% fictional account turned loose by and idle mind. The dawg did visit twice and the second time it was invited to leave. There were no treats left and no animals harmed. I couldn't kill the cats and I couldn't kill the coyote both actions being illegal. I was happy about the cats sitting on the roofs.
I misjudged the reception and for that I humbly beg your pardon. Next time I will preface the scribe with a (Tongue in cheek) note. Lesson learned!

IMNSHO (In My Not So Humble Opinion) You don't owe anyone an apology. She will figure out where the food is. All you have to do is let her have a little shade now and then. There is no law that says you have to chase her away.

Actually Oldspook many states have what is called a safe harbor law concerning homeless animals. (Not exact wording)
If you start feeding them and giving them shelter you are taking responsibility for them.,.,. I know this because we found ourselves in trouble for that very action.
Coyotes can be very dangerous and almost never travel alone, that small dog could have been just as easily a small child.
Sorry for my extreme reply but feeding wild predators is a dangerous thing. It is the reasons why feral dogs are so dangerous they are not scared of human scent.

In my neighbor HOOD, I believe you could've busted a cap in all 11 felines, the 'yote, the yappy lap pisser, and every other mammalian miscreant without fear of punishment. A stop sign on the corner of an intersection leaving/entering the 'hood has a full magazine worth of 9mm holes in it, the exits of which lead to a residential area densely populated. The apartment buildings in a mile radius of my house offer up enough gunfire so as to make occasional pot-shot rounds unnoteworthy. I decided to test a fireform load in my brand new custom varmint rifle in .20 PPC, so I used a ghetto silencer (empty plastic soda bottle taped over muzzle...do NOT try this or believe in its efficacy! DEER LORD that was loud), not a peep from the locals.

Understood... and agreed. Feral dogs are very dangerous. Coyotes can be as well. In my youth there was a large pack of feral dogs on Fort Eustis and they treed more than one hunter. Finally the wardens organized a hunting party and reduced their numbers.

It's all good.

Ah stories of a misspent youth... So I'm living in San Angelo, Texas, in town mind you. It is 1980. I rebuild my first black powder rifle. It's a .50 CVA Mountain Rifle with German Silver appointments. Beautiful... but I've had the breech plug out of it and I think I need to proof it. Soooo...

200 grains of Pyrodex and three round balls later I stick it in a vice and point it at a stack of 4x4s in the back of the garage... It is a good thing that nobody noticed the smoke seeping out of the garage because they all for sure heard the "test" shot. =) That thing shot through my stack of 4x4s and through the cinder block wall at the back of the garage. Believe it or not, it still shoots.

The only good yote is a dead yote, they are a very clever/smart hunter and do so in packs, I live in the country and it's mostly Dairy, Beef and Turkey Farms around me and every farmer will let you yote hunt if you ask. I've shot a couple Farrell cats over the years that were causing trouble and one dog that was chasing deer out in the woods when I was deer hunting one year, the dog was a issue for a few years and I just happened to get a shot on it,problem solved.
If I had neighbors cats using my flower bed or garden for thier rest room they would get no sympathy from me, I would get out the old Daisy and put a hurt on them and hopefully they would learn to stay away.

As to feral //// free roaming cats most states also have recognized the issue see queso law in relation to animal cruelty, most animal control will set traps and take the cats that isn't tagged to the shelter or warn/ ticket owners for allowing them to roam.

it seems the biggest issue here is the fear of authorities and retaliation in the form of neighbors calling authorities to complain about you (reader) shooting your airgun in your backyard, if you called on them for letting dog or cat roam. This is a matter of your own judgment as too if you have legal right to do so,

Motion activated sprinklers is my best advice in tandem with a good quality water gun or canon, between the two the said pest animals will start seeking other grounds to fertilize.
