Rephrased: Scaring off deer off of property

. I shot at a pack of deer to scare them off because they were on OUR property and eating OUR plants from OUR garden, and maybe hit. The point was to scare them off, I wasn’t hunting or anything so get that out of your brains, please.

the red Ryder i was shooting was used SPECIFICALLY to scare them off and not to hurt them. The muzzle energy is like 1 or less foot pounds and at 30-40 yards it’s probably less then a tenth of a foot pound.

Hopefully this is a joke . Anthony besides being wrong to do morally that is an illegal act. You can get in big trouble doing that and so can your parents for not stopping you. I don't know how old you are but you should take a hunter safety course and learn the laws before shooting at deer or any animal. Besides a red ryder bb gun is not good for any humane hunting. And most of all you should not post on public forums about shooting animals until you understand the rules and laws. Just be careful what you do because people are watching.

I'm all for scarring deer away but I usually give hunters access to my land and let them deal with the licenses, reporting the kills and the clean up of carcasses. I don't care if they gut, or more, where they drop but I don't want to find guts while mowing!! Back to scarring them away... When I shoot 'at them' my primary goal is to MISS them. In my neck of the woods the DNR actually come looking for shooters if a deer is reported to have any other wound other than the one that killed it (if the butcher finds it, I doubt others would report it). Not sure that's really in the law here but the butchers tell me the DNR police stop by in season and ask questions. And actually even me missing them on purpose to scare them, it prob illegal where I live. No judgement. Just be aware/careful.

Ok, a freakin' BB gun pushing a .177 steel BB at 350 FPS is dangerous ONLY to very soft tissues like the eyes. Children have been having BB gun fights since Daisy sold the first BB gun. SO lets not get our panties in a wad.

Now Antoni, in some states you can get in trouble for shooting critters with that BB gun. Be careful where you talk about it. Be darned careful that you are keeping your shots well away from their eyes (not that hard). You might do better with a paint marker but you will still have to avoid their eyes and soft tissues because a paint marker can certainly blind you as well. I've been shot with a marble out of a paint marker at about 15 feet, let me tell you THAT WILL leave a mark, so NO MARBLES.

Otherwise mind your backstop, keep a low profile, and remember what goes around often comes around.

Trust me. A bb gun shooting a bb at 350 fps is gonna do more than take out a eye. That's enough to go through your skins. Who shoots another person with a bb gun? You probably mean airsoft guns. Bb guns even the weak daisy and crosman bb co2 gun will go through your skins.

No I do not mean an airsoft gun. Yes, at the muzzle a bb going 350 fps will penetrate skin. It might even penetrate half an inch of tissue. He isn't shooting that BB at a deer that is a foot in front of the muzzle. I don't really feel like doing the math but what the hell. Given a BC of 0.005 for a steel BB at 350 fps (which is likely generous) as there are lead pellets with 0.007 BC; given a muzzle velocity of 350 fps (which is probably generous as this is the factory spec for those rifles); the BB sheds 150 fps of it's velocity (43 percent) in the first 20 yards. It is HIGHLY unlikely that he is stalking to within 20 yards of his dear friends. So lets push that out to a very generous successful stalk of 30 yards. At 30 yards his BB is now moving at about 155 fps and delivering a whopping half a foot pound. It stings. It leaves a mark (on a humans bare skin). At the muzzle a heavy shirt will stop it. In the 60s the military trained with BB guns in shoot houses so.... No I don't mean an airsoft gun. That said, even an airsoft gun will damage soft tissue like they eyes ...

What I am trying to inject here is a little common sense. You will observe the frequent references to soft tissue. Let one of those BBs hit you at 40 yards on your ear lobe and you'll think twice about playing BB gun tag. A thing we frequently did when I was a boy but the world was an entirely different place when I was a boy. We also had dirt clod fights and I got hit in an eye once with a dirt clod, took all day to wash that eye out and a month to heal.

Sigh. Why do people think I’m an idiot! I’ve done more reasearch that I have ever done on hunting, guns, folding knives (generally), airguns, and knife making. It’s not like I’d ever go and shoot at a cat or at a deer to try to hit it! I was just trying to scare them off

Oh boy,

Antoni

I don't think you are an idiot. Sorry if it came across that way.

First of all, thanks, but second, you don’t have to talk to me like a snowflake (don’t need to apologize). I can take a lot of trash coming my way verbally so no need to do that.

Fine.

If you read what I wrote rather than getting your panties in a bunch, you will see that I was speaking in defense of protecting your garden with a BB gun because it is one of the most humane ways you can do it other than to hang an electric fence. So maybe rather than being able to take it you should consider being able to READ IT.

Other than that, I am truly impressed with how quickly this whole thread went sideways. I should have simply stroked cancel rather than submit and been on my way.

Have a great day.

Sorry for being a idiot I got frustrated. Funny how you only realize how stupid you sounded after the hole thing went through.

Have a good day

Ha! That's the story of MY life.

Antoni, deer cost me A LOT of money every year, but that's where I live and a fact of life here. My comments above were simply meant to advise caution and maybe encourage some knowledge of your local 'hunting' law. Hitting your season limit in a single day here on deer wouldn't raise an eyebrow. If someone reported a pellet or bb imbedded in the meat.... dnr officers would be going door to door in the presumed range for the deer looking for airgun shooters, and they would take them!! . We just all need to exercise some caution to delay higher level regulations and crazy reactions from officers (and I don't blame them, what would I assume if I found an airgun shooter in the deer's assumed range - but then it become your problem to prove you weren't the shooter)..

I was just trying to scare them off, and I understand what you are talking about but I really was not even aiming directly at them.

Guess you will really think I'm an idiot. About 60 years ago on the farm 8-10 of us kids would play war with BB guns.3 pair of jeans, winter coat, gloves, ski goggle and I can't remember what head gear, maybe leather wool lined cap. But we were fully protected. 2 were killed in VN by hidden devises and at least 5 were some military high marksman. Those were some of the hottest most enjoyable days of my life. Now to the post, Sling shot and marbles would most likely work better. I doubt all that hair would be penetrated. Also in most states he could kill they for attacking his garden. remember we are on the web and deer in your area maybe seen vary rarely or 200-300 in a 50 acre field.

I agree. The Red Rider has a little over 1 ft lbs. If you hit the deers body at the distance you mention. It's a bee sting ! Don't worry about it ! In addition... DON'T DO IT AGAIN !
