Willie, you know … it's not all about the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat. It's so much more than that. It's about development and style and character. It's about you caring enough to take time from your busy life to spend with a young fella going into a time in his life that can be very confusing and sometimes a little scary. It's about bonding, both of you being smitten by the beauty, bounty and variety of nature in God's world. Nature, by itself, can give you some great clues about what God is like. Everything in nature has it's own character and ways, just as all of us are intended to have our own character, ways, values and ethics. Sean was meant to be what noone else is … to have a unique, one of a kind, indivisuality about him which cannot be found in anyone else. He needs to grow, become strong and to be taught all of life's lessons. Some lessons can be really tough for a young fella to understand … like being at peace with who you are on the inside. I've heard it said that it is better to be hated for who you are than to be loved for who you are not. You are not a better person because you are praised, nor are you any worse off if someone denigrates you … you are what you are! And when a young man struggles within himself, he becomes an item of great value and worth. Because what lies behind us and what lies ahead of us are small matters indeed compared to what lies within us.
To mentor this young man, to be his friend and councellor, to make him part of your life and share your thoughts, life and insights with him benefits you both. He gets to see and understand the time tested wisdom of why you do things the way you do … and you get to see the world through the fresh eyes, insight and wonderment of youth. I would say you both are extremely fortunate to have each other.
