I remember back in the 90s people used to shoot real guns on new year. But I heard that's illegal now. Someone correct me. I'm laying in bed and I can hear what sounds like 9mm hand guns going bang, bang, bang…like 8 shots. Is that legal? I'm pretty sure they celebrating new years. Can I go outside and start shooting my ar15?

Yeah that is mildly ILLEGAL on more levels than one. Probably best to stay inside to avoid the falling lead.

I was pretty sure it was illegal now. But wasnt sure. Back in the days it was common to shoot guns on new year to celebrate a new year.

Well, depending on your state/local laws, it has been always illegal to shoot guns into the air.  What goes up, must come down.  Some laws also prohibit shooting within a certain amount of feet/yards from another neighbor.  Unlawful Discharge of a Firearm, Reckless Conduct are some of the charges someone would be arrested for where I'm from.

It is illegal in some places.  They’ve been shooting for 2 hours here already and it’s only 9PM.  I’m staying in.

Some places it is illegal, some places it is not illegal.  Here if you want to bust a pound of tannerite on the 4th or New Years nobody is going to make an issue of it.  That may change if the new legislature gets their way.  But I have been known to stick my .270 out the window and shoot tannerite off the end of the dock.  One year some guy across the river must have spent fifty bucks on the stuff as the explosions lasted for 20 minutes.

You are making the assumption that they are shooting into the air.  Most folks have enough common sense to shoot at something or in a safe direction.

    1. Some people are drinking and will fire up in the air while celebrating. What goes up must come down.

    2. Check your local laws. Some places have loose restrictions, others not so much. Where I live, it is illegal to discharge a firearm for recreational or hunting purposes within 200 feet of a neighbor's residence without a laundry list of concessions that would be to vague to check every box with.

    3. Stay safe and Happy New Year.

In Puerto Rico is illegal..you are going to jail fast..to many deaths over the years..by falling  bullets on new year's eve…last few years you can rarely hear shots…but back like 8 years ago it was like there was a war 😁

    🤣

Only gun I would shoot into the air would be a shotgun over a field we have,.

I've been known to hot load my .50 Muzzleloader with nothing but powder and wad it will make a BIG BOOM

Last year our neighbor got a crap load of those big mortars and was firing them off began to get on my nerves so I popped off my Muzzleloader jerk called the cops on me

I live where it’s legal to shoot in your own yard with a berm. Nobody fires guns on New Years or 4th of July. They send up 3” mortars for hours though that shake the windows and you can feel concussion in your chest.
I don’t mind. Sad though as many have been killed by falling lead.
