Let's take 2 pellets at random as an example. These were only chosen because they were listed as working in a particular rifle I was looking at.
JSB Match Exact Express Diabolo, .177 Cal, 7.87 Grains
JSB Match Diabolo Exact RS .177 Cal, 7.33 Grains
Let's assume that unsorted in your air rifle the 7.33 grain pellet is more accurate. However, if you sort the 7.33 grain pellets you discover a certain head diameter is also preferred. This seems to be common practice among pellet sorters, and some even do skirt diameters.
Question 1:
If someone were to produce 4.49, 4.50, 4.51....4.53 head diameter pellets weighing 7.45 grains and those tolerances were strictly held to (both weight and head size) then once you found the correct head size for your rifle and purchase them in sorted lots would they be more accurate?
Put another way is holding strict head size and weight more critical in terms of accuracy over the actual weight of the pellet?
Question 2:
Would you be willing to pay a penny or two more per pellet if the tolerances (weight and head diameter) were manufactured, sorted, and produced in a more accurate lot sequence?
Please educate me one anything else I have missed in my short study of this (e.g. high lead content, more alloy such as tin, lead free requirements, etc.).
