HW97K frustration

I've had the HW97k for less than a year and when I first got it I discovered that the Crosman Premier Ultra Magnum Dome pellets shot great in it. In fact, they performed better than JSB 16 and 18 gr. They also beat out H&N sniper lite pellets so I was feeling mighty fine because I have at least 25 tins of Crosman UM domes. Well earlier this week that "magic" tin ran out and when I started a new tin, I'm getting mixed results. This new tin is so inconsistent. Some pellets fit snugly in the breech and they shoot fine, but some fit loose and they hit way off the mark. I'm going to pull out a new tin and hopefully I will get it back on track.

Sounds more like pellet frustration than rifle frustration. Hang in there Norm! It may be just a matter of using a different pellet. I have very limited .22 cal HW experience but my .22 prefers the H&N FTTs in 5.53 or 5.54 head sizes. Many report similar pellet preferences in their .22 cal HW rifles. Sure would be nice if your issue was just the one tin of pellets. I have only ever shot the Crosman pellets from the tins, no brown boxed stuff (.177 and .22). My results were less than desirable in any of my rifles.

Oh yeah, it's definitely the pellets. It's just that I thought I had hit the jackpot since I have so many tins of the Crosman pellets. I have a few guns that shoot them very well. I have a couple of brown boxes in both 177 and 22 cal, but I can't see a big difference in performance between them and the metal tins. I'm going to have to try the Field Target pellets. But hopefully, I get lucky with a different tin of CPUM domes.

I have shot thousands of pellets through my .22 Weihrauch HW97K, before and after Scott Schneider at Motorhead Airgun Tuning Services worked his magic. This rifle will shoot <1/2" groups at 20 yards all day long, but it definitely favors H&N Field Target Trophy 14.66 grain in the 5.53 head size. I have tried about every other diablo pellet made, and this pellet shoots circles around all others in this particular rifle.

Crosman, JSB, Air Arms, and about anything else you can think of as the normal "premium" pellts have been tried. The FTT definitely groups better every time.

Good luck.

I had a similar experience with mine. When I tested the gun with the CPHPs they outperformed anything else. Bought 5 tins based on that info, and they are all over the place.

Just need a little time to play and will try to update the thread.

If you don’t have any, let me know if you want to try the brown box stuff. I would be happy to send some your way.

My Beeman HW97K prefers the FTT'S above all others , as well. It's visiting Scott at the moment. Very accurate, but that twang. ..

Your 97's finished up and ... shooting exceptionally stable & consistent with FTT's, Testing with some Crosman domes it was all over the place POI and speed wise.

Scott S

Yeah, that was my experience with the Crosmans! It just loves those FTT's! Thanks for gettin' on it!
