HW97K chrony #'s today, and.......ever get tired of poking holes in paper?

Finally had a day that I could shoot my Weihrauch 97K across the chronograph and find out what it's doing. It was an over cast day with a temperature right around 40 degrees. I shot three 10 shot strings using H&N FTT 14.66 gr. 5.54 head size.......

String #1 Average 667 fps, ES 9 and SD 3

String #2 Average 667 fps, ES 15 and SD 4

String #3 Average 666 fps, ES 16 and SD 5

That makes it right at about a 14.5 FPE rifle........I'm plenty good with that. That is more than enough to easily dispatch small game quickly. Particularly with the accuracy that this rifle has. I know because I have already taken small game with it. It is also shooting with pretty good consistency I think. I may see if I can improve upon it later on. But, I am fine with it's performance as of now. Because it is a freakin tack driver.......😁

Do any of you ever just get tired of punching holes in paper? I sure do. I get to the point that I can't even group well any more and I think it's because I simply get bored and weary with shooting little black spots on a board or paper. That happened to me this afternoon. So I just put the shooting bag away and began having some fun. I started shooting with no bag support at the steel reactive targets I have set up in the yard. I have them at 25..30..35 and 40 yards. I just couldn't freakin miss with this rifle. So much fun.....😊

Thanks and enjoy shooting those spring guns.......get out there and do it!

Apparently not. I have been a target shooter since I got my Sheridan Blue Streak at age 12. I could hardly pump it at first. Every once and a while I drag out the spinners, but usually it is paper so I can learn to call shots, see my errors, etc. The one exception I suppose is hunting. A well executed shot on game helps justify all the practice.

Yes, paper punching can get boring. I shoot a few great groups get bored, lose form, concentration, etc. I shot a few dime size groups at 40 yards to confirm zero today. Then started shooting pieces of sidewalk chalk from 50 to 64 yards. Powdering the chalk never gets old, I can’t believe the repeatable hits I’m getting at 64 yards on such small pieces. I’m a plinker and pester at heart.

Once I accomplish what I want on the paper- sighting in or whatever, I like to move onto reactive targets. I think its also important to shoot at a wide variety of targets because it sharpens up your skills for hunting where the critter is moving, not quite at exactly 35m, presenting its profile in some weird way. Paper targets are uniform, plinking targets aren't. Shooting at non-uniform targets forces us to adjust our shooting to the target. Whereas with paper targets, we set those out exactly to where and how we want to shoot at them.- hardly good preparation for hunting. Paper punching and plinking both serve an important purpose.

I get bored with poking holes in paper as well. I'd resort to bottle caps, aspirin tabs, 6 oz aluminum cans filled with water, or small fruits, set up at various distances. That helps break the monotony of paper punching.

Those are pretty good chrony numbers. How does that compare to your RWS 34 ? I'd like to try the 5.54mm head FTT in my Sig. I have the 5.53mm head now at it shoots them at 840 fps in warm weather. The larger head might give better accuracy and velocity in my Sig. I'm going to PM you Tired Rooster.

Great feedback fellas. Thank you. I kinda agree with nearly everything said in your replies. Everyone has their little preferences as far as how they most enjoy shooting their rifles. I personally will tire of shooting at paper targets after a while. But, it has it's very important role. You have to know that your rifle is "dialed in" properly, so to speak.

I have never had the opportunity to shoot FT. But I would love to try it one day. I do hunt with my air rifles, so shooting my steel reactive targets at different ranges helps me tremendously with knowing what my hold overs are with my springers at various ranges. I have successfully made some fairly long shots on game with a springer.....long to me anyway. But, if it were not for practicing on different sized targets at different ranges I probably wouldn't have been able to do that.

Anyway.....I am always trying to get better and better with the springer. Thats the fun in it for me!

Thanks a bunch.....TR

I have a .177. Lately I’ve been thinking about getting one in .22. I’m trying to build my play money back up....

I like shooting paper. What’s gets boring to me is shooting the same distance all the time. I like to set up a bunch of different type targets at various distances and shoot like that. I long for the dryer summer days when I can do that. Now it’s wet out and I usually only have a couple targets set up and that gets old shooting the same known distances all the time. One nice target to shoot at are those plastic practice golf balls. I’ll toss a few out at around 20 yards and chase them out to 75 yards IF I can hit them that far. It sort of ups the challenge some and keeps the mind engaged a little more for me. Of course this is weather permitting.

Nice looking range you have there Brett ! What are you holding in that last picture?

I'm a plinker/pester at heart so I prefer reactive targets like spinners set up at random distances.

I do shoot a bit of paper, mostly to sight in and check pellets but have a limited attention span - I know that I need to quit when shooting the push-pins holding the target is more interesting than shooting at the bulls LOL!!

Thats too funny! I literally will do the same thing after a long enough session shooting at paper targets. I will start shooting the little colored plastic push pins holding the target up. 😁 I will also sometimes shoot a black metal fence post that is right at 40 yards just to make an impact mark on it, so that I can then use that impact mark as a target to shoot at too. I like shooting at different targets .....different ranges....different angles, etc. or I get bored as well.

You have a really nice place to shoot there! Thanks for sharing the pictures. That is a good idea, shooting at the practice golf balls and knocking them out further and further from you........I may try that one out!
