Hw97 tune kit - will I notice a difference?

I am still learning my new to me 97, only have a few hundred pellets through it so far. I bought a multi pack from straight shooters and haven’t shot all the choices yet but there are a couple types that are shooting dime sized groups at 30 yards. It’s not as quiet as my marauder but seems quieter than my Fwb124. It’s harder to cock than the 124. I do not think the previous owner ever tuned it and I’m wondering if I would notice any difference if I installed a tune kit.

I’m new to springers and started out with a HW97. Simply amazing gun but there were a couple of things needing attention. Being used to PCPs, I wanted a good crisp sub 1# trigger and a smoother shot cycle. I played around with the trigger for a while with so so results. Someone on here suggested sending it to Motorhead for a tune. Maybe the best advice I’ve ever gotten from someone on AGN! If you tell him just what you want your gun will be “transformed” and made soooo much better with just his base tune. I really love my 97 now. Uj

You’ll notice a difference with a tune. Most twang should be gone and the shot cycle is likely to be smoother. Whether or not that is worth the cost of the tune kit to you is entirely subjective. I have not found these kits to have any material impact on accuracy. My hw97k in .177 has a JM tune kit and shoots at about 12fpe. With the factory spring, it shot about 13.5fpe.

It absolutely depends on what kit you install. My 97 was not very smooth so I installed a sub-12 ft lb kit in it. Velocity is 755 to 760 fps using .177 H&N FTT's and two spacers that came with the kit. The shot cycle is more of a pop than a boing now. Velocity was higher with just one spacer when the kit was new but after 6 months velocity dropped down to around 730 fps so I added another spacer. The loss in velocity over factory specs is worth the smoothness and I am sure the gun is making things easier on my scope now. Interestingly though, I lose 15 - 20 fps when I go from (claimed) 4.50 mm to 4.52 mm diameter pellets. The difference in weight between the two sizes is only 0.03 grains using a 10 pellet average. The 4.50's go into the bore easily, the 4.52's take some effort. Accuracy is similar with both. I don't know if the difference would be as noticeable with a more powerful spring.

I have installed Vortek kits myself and while they are an improvement, I will not do it again. Send the rifle to Scott at Motorhead and for the small difference you will pay for his expertise I believe one comes out way ahead.

I agree with bdzjlz send it to Motorhead and get it done right. I've none 1 rifle 5 times myself and I wish I'd sent it to Scott, I'm still not 100% happy with that one.

OP, if you don't notice a difference with a tune, then...why?

My own new 97 shoots great, no issues except it's twangy, as many of those seem to be. So I'm considering a tune that will take care of that, so it's likely that I will send it out...and I've got the tuner selected, based on his credibility and willingness to help others...and no his reputation too, of course!

Keep us tuned in!

I never shot the hw 97 but I have been doing alot of research on them so I can justify buying one and heres what I am going yo do when mine comes in the mail. 1 I will keep the stock spring but I will square it up with sandpaper on a perfectly flat glass block. 2 use 600 grit to 800 grit to 1200 grit on the piston and piston tube. Hopefully I can get a quality delrin spring guide and top hat for a lower price than a kit with a sping in it and thats where I will stop. That way I wont be losing power with 12 fpe kit or gaining energy with a vortec kit but the shot cycle will be smoother. Only time will tell if it is a good plan but thats how I will start out. Good luck to you!
