HW95 vs HW98?, Just Because Battles are Trending

What’s y’alls thoughts between these two? I know it’s been asked before, but wanted a fresh perspective.

I’m thinking of getting my next Springer sometime in the near future. I’m thinking of going .20. Between mixed opinions, higher costs, & poor selection of ammo, I have avoided getting one.

Opinions on the caliber choice also welcome. Snarky or uncalled for remarks are not.

My favorite is the hw97 with laminate stock. When I get one I want it in 20 cal. Number one reason is that it's different. I love doing that other thing. 2nd 177 can be slightly difficult to kill rabbit with. It can be done with great success but bigger is generally better with hunting. Also 20 cal is way better than 22 for field target if you ever wanted to get into that. Lastly it's harder hitting than 177 and flatter shooting than 22. I've been waiting for a gun to shoot 20 cal and those hw guns are screaming at me. I think you will be happy with the 22.plus don't you already have some 177 and 22 guns? This ain't your first rodeo is it?

No, not the first rodeo, but I still think of myself as a rookie and want to learn as much as I can. I do have .177s an .22. Two HW97s in .177, one HW30. in .177, and Walther LGVs in both .177 & .22. Thinking of shaking things up in a bit and moving some stuffs around, but that's for later. I had the opportunity to pick up an HW95 in .20 a while back and I let it go, kinda regret it now, ergo the current thread.

I love my HW97s, but want a straight up break-barrel this time, not an under-lever. Under my radar for new Springers are: HW50, 95, 98. If I get a 50, it will be in .177. Don't think I want both 95 & 98, just want to narrow it down to one.

I love the .20,have it in a R9...I always wanted a Rocket 98,oops HW98 ,I think it is a adjustable R9 with an added barrel tube...since you have the others that is what you should get...I have many of the same springers as you =get the 98...

The .20 is Great...people that have it or had it know...

Another ...to me great break barrel is the English made Webly Tomahawk..is rather large, hard to find because people hold on to them.

You have some great air rifles.

.20 cal right on brother!!!

The only real difference between the 95 and 98 is the weight! The barrel sleeve and the adjustable field target stock on the 98 make it weigh considerably more....but if your a back yard plinker and not planning on hunting with it then it sure is pretty and probably slightly more accurate with the added heft! I have a HW80 and a 97k in .20 and love both of them to death...I had a model 72 marksman in .20 and my brother talked me out of it....grrrrrr! I kinda regret that one. Its pretty much a model 85/R10 in a different stock. And as far as ammo choices the few still available all shoot really well!

Ok let's do this which one? Lol.

Thanks guys. So far I am leaning HW95. Frankly, the 98 stock is a bit unsightly to me. I don’t like the little lines on the side. But am willing to overcome that if it was lights out better than the 95.

I am a backyard warrior, but don’t intend on staying that way for too long. Kids are growing and I look forward to getting out there again soonish.

I’m also hoping that JSB releases a .20 Hades. On that note, how do the Polymags fare in .20?

My 97 shoots them very well out to 40 yards at a little over 14fpe. But at 19fpe out of my HW80 they start to wander after 30 yards! Out of all the .20s the JSB 13.7s are the best for me. Suprisingly enough those funky Benjamin domes shoot really well too.

I have the R11 and 2 R9's, I like the extra weight and look of the barrel weight so I added them to both R9's. On the .177 R9 I added an adjustable recoil pad also and may add one to the .22 or maybe a custom stock for one of them. Of course the R11 is a bit heavier so it comes down to if you are going to be carrying it a bit or bench shooting I suppose but either way I'm not a .20 fan

. Are they the same as in appearance, stocks or tuning. Do they both shoot or are as accurate as each other especially their choice of pellet.

Thanks

Gary

Gary. It’s a little of a story, but basically I ended up buying another one to compete. It has the right stock for that. If I end up not competing, I may sell it. It became available after I bought the first one & I buckled. The stock is just the cat’s meow. Will see. I’m still trying to find myself if you will.

Some random thoughts.

The HW98 is the last Weirauch that I'd like to try. Out of a handful of HW springers that I have tried, an HW50s is the one that stuck around. My HW50s is like a mini HW98 with a barrel sleeve and adjustable buttpad. That barrel sleeve really helps with accuracy. The extra couple FPE with the 95/98 family, over the 50s, is what has me interested.

I've held an HW98 and that stock is NICE. I'm not sure I love the looks either, but it sure feels good when shouldered, and I suspect could be made to feel even better, with the stock adjustments.

As for the .20, very cool caliber. My Raptor is a .20 and it has shot the best large count group I've ever shot. (Yes I know, mentioning a PCP on the springer forum.....but it's the caliber that's semi relevant).

I've posted the same pic elsewhere, but this is 21 shots at 55 yards at around 24-25fpe with the 13.73gr JSB from the Raptor.

Made me a .20 believer.

.20 caliber will be a fine choice. I suspect many are turned off to the caliber because there isn’t umpteen million choices in pellet brands/styles/weights. One thing though, is there are enough choices to find which one shoots well in your airgun.

I have plenty vintage .20 pellets and nearly as many current/modern .20 pellets.

I do only have an R1 in the .20 caliber to comment. I would choose the HW 98, first
