HW95 Luxus 1500 round update

I figured I should provide an update on this HW95 since I took the time to post my initial disappointment in it a while back after getting it new. Well, I have 3 tins of Crosman Premier Domed 14.3 grain pellets through this gun and a couple hundred other pellets also, and I can say it is my new favorite springer. When I got it, it was accurate, but the spring noise and harsh shot cycle was a bit much for me to take as I have a few other springers that are pretty pleasant. After disassembling the rifle at 500 rounds, I found the piston seal badly damaged. With the original seal removed, I found it was split through from the face to its back side where it sits atop the piston. Airguns of Arizona was awesome as they were kind enough to send a new seal. Of course they offered to repair or replace the gun, but since it had a great barrel and all else was looking/working well, I elected to continue with my original plan. I installed a Air Rifle Headquarters Hornet spring/guide/seal kit. I did lubricant this gun with Krytox GPL-205. This is the first time I've used this grease and it seems good so far. I usually use Moly paste but thought I see how this stuff works.

So far, all is great. The spring noise is gone, shot cycle flat and a joy to shoot. I did try to use the new factory seal, but I found the gun made low power(550 fps with Crosman 14.3), it was loud and you could feel the piston slamming hard. The Maccari seal is 1.035 inches in diameter and the factory one measured 1.030. I guess that .005" really makes a difference. With this spring kit installed, the gun is shooting the Crosman domed 14.3 at 695 fps on average with a standard deviation of 3 over 30 shots. Minor trigger adjustments employed. Now, I dont even realize it has a trigger. Cocking effort stands at 33 pounds. Easily shooting 10 round, sub dime sized groups at 22 yards. I wanted to love this gun, now I do. Enough so, its got me thinking about a HW98 in .177. And, maybe something nicer to look though on the 95!

That's great that you did not give up on that rifle and got the problem solved.

I have an HW95 Field Pro in .22. I liked it so much that I bought another HW95 but this time in .177. The 95 is a great air rifle and I really like having them in both calibers.

I also shoot the 14.3 Crosman Primier Domed pellets with good results. The H&N Field Target 14.66gr pellets are recommended by a lot of folks here for the HW95. I tried them and they have proven to be very accurate. The JSB 15.89gr .22 caliber pellets shoot very well in my rifle and would be also worth giving a try.

I also have about 1.5K pellets through my HW95L and MOS at 25 yards is common for me now. I like the H&N FTT 14.66 gr pellets which seem to be very accurate. 10 shots using these pellets average 689 FPS through my stock 95. I have an ARH kit sitting in the gun safe BUT the rifle is shooting so good as is that I will wait until the accuracy falls off before installing it. These 95s are such a joy to shoot and my wife also loves to plink from the back deck.

Maccari makes a good tune kit. He knows a lot about tuning springers. Every HW95 I have ever had has done well with his tune kit. Its nice that the CP's are accurate out of your gun. It doesn't always seem to be the case these days. Nice gun!

Thanks fellas!

Deerstalker, if it ain't broke, don't fix it! It'll probably be several thousand more rounds before the factory spring even thinks of breaking.

I wanted to add the pictures of my original seal(right side) with 500 rounds on it and the second factory seal(left one)

provided by AOA with less than one hundred rounds. The Maccari Hornet seal is oversized by .005". I think the bigger seal rides the compression chamber walls better.
