HW50s barrel sleeve/weight/shroud

I've shared some pics of this gun before but was recently asked about the barrel sleeve (AGN member came across an old post and saw my mention of it.) I told him I'd take some pics and figured I'd share them here rather than just PM back. Most of us are airgun nuts enough to enjoy pics of guns.

So, HW50s with barrel sleeve from Tinbum tunes in England. They're not on his website and weren't a couple years ago when I ordered it. I had seen a couple comments in UK springer forums about him making them so sent an email and he had fortuitously just had a batch made and they just lacked bluing. I sent him the funds and he sent me the sleeve when the bluing was done. Bluing on mine is just a touch better than OEM HW bluing. From memory I think I paid around $80 shipped? But it has been a while so fuzzy on the exact $ amount.

Anyway, really sweet shooter. Sitting in a 2x6 stock that I fashioned. Lets just say the stock works but isn't professional quality by any means. I prefer this stock over the OEM stock for field target/bum bag shooting.

Very nicely setup hw50s! Mine has become my favorite spring gun. Don’t see many of those setup for FT duty. At what FPE is yours shooting?

Other than FWB300 series, yes, my favorite springer too. Mine is only putting out about 9fpe, but I live at elevation of 5600ft so that doesn't help. It'll shoot about anything pretty good, but I've been mostly shooting JSB 7.87 for the last couple years. It's first couple years of life were strictly boxed 7.9gr CPs and it made a lot of really good shots with that pellet. Favorites were a ground squirrel at about 25 yards and in winds 25mph. I'd just sighted it in and new I needed about 8 inchs of hold off, lol. The other one that sticks out was a pigeon off the top of a telephone pole (a subdivision that never came to be behind it so vacant fields). Dunno how far it was but guessing 60 or 70 yards to the base of the pole from where I was. Sounded like a good solid hit but he "flew." In reality just locked his wings and crashed and burned about 50 yards from the pole. Complete hale mary but cool memory from this sweet little springer.

Thanks for the positive feedback guys.

I LOVE that stock. But is it comfortable?

I have been wanting to build an ultra lightweight aluminum stock. You have given me the courage to go ahead.

It's actually quite comfortable to shoot from when sitting on a bum back, field target style.

The scoop taken out of the cheek piece was done little by little to match my face and eye alignment with this particular scope and mounts.

The grip was also slowly shaped to perfectly match my hand size.

And it balances really well on that knee riser, like I hoped it would.

As far as"fit" the places I'd change, knowing what I know l now know, are the knee riser and the length of pull. The knee riser needs to have a longer "foot" by just about two inches so that I can stretch out and into my shooting harness. It works as is but I have to tighten the straps that go to the knees by a couple inches for everything to be tensioned the way I like it when in shooting position (compared to how I have the harness set up for al my other guns). And the lop worked out just a bit short. If you look close you can see I added in a block of delrin between the wood and the 3d printed butthook/buttpad. It's perfect with that delrin spacer, but just knowing it's there, instead of an inch of wood bothers me. One of those, builder knows the flaws things.

Oh, I'd prefer it be heavier too. Pine is a mighty lightweight wood. Adding in those heavy fender washers on the hardware for the semi-adjustable heights of riser and cheek piece gained me back some weight, but it could still use more.

Shooting it puts a smile on my face every time. This stock, even being construction lumber, fits so much better for ft shooting that I can really be a lot more accurate with the gun than I could with the OEM stock. The gun is REALLY accurate, even without the qualifier if it being a springer.

If this was a carry around, general use gun I think I'd probably go back to the OEM stock, just cuz it's more svelte and less blocky, having fewer sharp angles to snag and catch on clothing, brush, cases, etc. The OEM stock is really a better general use stock than what I made. But for FT, which is pretty much target work, it's staying in this 2x6 abomination. Lol.

Here's the post I made a while back, somewhat documenting the process of how I made it. Inspiration came from AGN member vanatu(sp?), who had shared about his table saw stock making adventures and motivated me to give it a try.

I say go for it with your desires to make an aluminum chassis stock. Just come back and share the results!

I can relate as I've "de-tuned" my .177 hw50s to about 10-10.5fpe depending on the pellet used. The accuracy and shot cycle at this lower power are much improved from how it came from the factory IMHO. And that is plenty of power for small game hunting out to 30-35 yards too.
