HW44 vs. AP16 which one??

Got the itch for a new gun and I’m thinking about a pcp pistol. I’ve narrowed it down to the HW44 and the AP16 in .22. I’m leaning towards the Ataman as I own an M2R pup and am very impressed with the craftsmanship. I know that the Weihrauch guns are also high end but have never owned any.

Is one better than the other? Are they worth the money? Does anyone have experience with both?

I have an HW44 it is the gun to have. A bit more powerful than the AP16 with a similar shot count and very comfortable to hold. The HW44 is suppressed so a quiet gun also and is a ten shot repeater instead of the eight on the AP. The AP does look better in my opinion but that is the only plus I see in the gun over the HW. The HW gets 3/4 inch groups at 50 that's 50 yards as well. The AP does look like a nice gun though, seems to be all metal unlike the HW and it compares favorably with the HW except for the sound and possibly the accuracy. I really don't think you could go wrong with either gun.

Is it worth $1000? I had a hard time with it at first but once you shoot it for awhile the answer is yes if you have the funds to burn.

I recently took the HW44 out for a 50 yard test.

I own both HW44s and 2 AP16 pistols including one converted into a carbine and the bullpup BP17 And HW100 BULLPUPS.

I no longer shoot the HW44 pistols at all and like the Ataman AP16 a lot better. If I hadn't bought 2 HW100 BULLPUPS I probably still wouldn't shoot my HW44s

I do love my HW110 rifles and do shoot them which seem to share the platform and magazines as the HW44s but don't shoot the HW44s since the Ataman pistols are more fun FOR ME TO SHOOT. Buy both if you have the means since both are accurate 50 yard pistols. OH you need to order the HW44 from Krale to get the removable silencer otherwise it's permanent buying from any dealer in the USA.

It is also a pain to remove the KRALE removeable HW44 silencer that's not threaded on that needs an Allen wrench to remove and install. The domestically purchased doesn't have that problem since it looks either riveted on Or grubscrew heads sheared off so you can't remove it and making it permanently attached to the pistol.

Have owned both and agree with Yo that the AP16 is more fun to shoot. The HW44 is a lot of pistol - it's big. It's 19" long with the moderator attached. The AP16 Compact is a really nice size and still a very capable 14-15 fpe pistol in .22. I don't really have any cons for either pistol as both are VERY accurate.

HW44 - hands down one of the best triggers, somewhat gritty feel on the magazine loading and cocking, if you have a large hand you might not like the grip

AP16 - Very light and compact, decent single stage trigger (very user adjustable), more 'pistol' feeling that the HW44.

You won't go wrong with either, but if you have the itch now you might as well get a HW44. Every AP16 on Pyramyd has been pre-order for the past 2 months and the date just keep bumping out each week. I don't know if this means the pre-orders outweigh the supply they get each shipment and they never have spares to put up for sale, or if there are just no shipments coming in. Either way it looks like a waiting game for the AP16.

I recently wound up with both, a .22 AP16 and .177 HW44. Never thought I wanted a PCP pistol but wound up trading for the AP. It came with a red dot that I replaced with a pistol scope and have been really happy with it. So much so that when the HW44 came up on classifieds I bought it.
My AP came to me shooting 13.43's in the 620's. I can get 49 shots (7 mags) on a 3500 psi fill. Power could easily be turned up but for me, it's perfect where it's at.
The HW averages 750 fps with 10.3's. If I fudge a bit on the filling I can get 30 shots (3 mags).

They are both very accurate, although I probably lean ever so slightly toward the AP. I never shoot either beyond 40 yds. The AP has a smaller magazine, but is easier/quicker to get in and out. My AP came with a DonnyFL Tanto (I think), which made it very quiet, but also very long. I made a moderator that is nothing but a 2" hollow tube that works well for me. I don't need whisper quiet. I could probably add a baffle and quieten it down more, but I'm satisfied. The overall length is now about 16".
The HW is super quiet, and also super long (19"). I love the picatinny rail on the HW. I shoot both airguns from a bench and adding a bipod really makes a difference for me.
I even figured out a way to add a bipod to the AP.

You can't go wrong with either.

Something to consider is if you buy the AP16 through Krale is might (at least mine did) come with the Ataman pistol moderator. It's a decent moderator for it's size but still loud. I stuffed the baffles with felt and wire and it helped a tiny bit. But it is very light and doesn't change the dynamic of the pistol. I simply takes to crack out of the shot but doesn't muffle it that much. A Huggett Atom works okay too. But a Huggett Astille in .22 with no extensions will bring it down to almost nothing. Add one extension and you get the farting mice - if that's what you need.

...now I am glad I skipped that and got the Tanto in 25...

...it does still have some bark but not so much bite...

EDIT: ...Hells Bells, now the HP44 is all backordered too...!!!..LoL...!!!...

...I like how it comes with an effective silencer installed...that make it cheaper than the AP16...

...I hate how it is all made of plastic...that makes it cheaper than the AP16...

@ctshooter, @h2okenny and @hapo, thanks for chiming in with your opinion, really appreciated. Been back and forth looking at specs and what videos I could find, I’m definitely liking the AP over the HW by a slim margin. Wouldn’t mind waiting for one, just don’t want to wait too long, if you know what I mean. I was already thinking Tatsu for it being the shortest (I think) DonnyFl, but wouldn’t want it to look silly.

...so what did you end up doing...???...

...I could not quite bring myself to pull the trigger on the HW44 because of it's bulky nature...

...I am still looking at the AP16...I see the big problem with mine was me...

...they should both be in stock soon @ PA...three silver compact AP16's are now (8/15/20 16:00)...

...I would get the FX or the Tanto for the AP 16...I am thinking the FX may be the "best"...

...I read here the 7" Koi had some clipping issues for one member...also heard it was very quiet...

...Donny Du said you can still shoot over the Sumo with the open sights if you want to go big so the Tatsu would work but it has been noted as the loudest on the AP16......

I ordered the AP16 Standard from PA. In stock date kept changing and was getting towards end of August, now says 8/17. Magazines are already in stock. Maybe I’ll have it next week(wishful thinking) Went with the Tanto and already have it ready to go.
