HW30S or Walther Terrus

It’s a damn shame Gary. I can certainly tell you that there are worse places to be. I would have never been able to even order a rifle of any kind in my native country. I vaguely remember an airgun in my dad’s house that was there probably for a long time, no clue what it was at all, except I remember it was a break barrel. I also had a family member that was an airgun competitor, but all that was heavily sanctioned by the government. I truly hope you get your rifle soon.

It’s 6.45 am Wednesday and I’ve just got off the phone from the gun shop, they start early. Its here, it’s here. A quick bite to eat and we’re off. It’s a 6 or 7 hour return journey down to the shop in Brisvagas so i should be able to shoot it late this arvo. It has been inspected and tested and apparently is grouping well. Happy days.

Watching this thread has been remarkably painful. Some of the private purchases I've made are people who won't accept paypal and live on the west coast. And to think how hard it was to wait almost a whole week for the money to get there, then wait another whole week for the gun to get to me! Even places like the UK still let you own an HW30 without too much fuss!

I hope it is a particularly fine example of an HW30 and that you enjoy it as much as I enjoy mine.

And, yes, we want pictures and a full report!

Gary, congratulations on the HW30! I hope you have a great time breaking that beauty in over the coming weeks and months.

Just so you know, I've rejoined the ranks of the Happy Springers Tribe, although I still have two PCPs with which to play. Unlike you, I went the other direction on this thread and received my new Walther Terrus yesterday! Man what a sweet rifle it is. I'll post some pictures under a new topic later today but it's so great to have a really well-crafted German spring rifle in my hands at last.

Beeman22 yes it was a long wait, 108 days to be exact but I’m sure it was worth it. Can’t wait really.

Pete I was wondering when you would return, I’m really looking forward to your posts on your new German girlfriend.

Its dark here and I’m in bed with a cup of tea. I’m like a bloody kid at Christmas time waiting for enough light to go outside and ride that new bike. We got home about an hour before dark yesterday and after doing my chores I put a few pellets through. I put an empty tin of pellets at about 10 metres and tried with the iorn sights........😜😜😜😜 couldn’t see the end of the sights let alone hit the tin. The first thing I noticed that it requires a fairly hefty tap to break the barrel and it’s very quite. Really no report from the barrel only mechanical noises from the spring.

I will post some pics later.

Well here she is, ain’t she a pretty little thing. I know the scope may be a little big but it’s the only one in the cupboard that ain’t broke. So far about 60 pellets and it’s now starting to group. The only pellets I have are H&N Barracuda, Barracuda Match and Barracuda Hunter Extreme. The Extremes are grouping the best. Top left and bottom left. There’s about 10 or so shots in each. The distance is 30 metres.

Out of the box she wasn’t as accurate as her German sisters, fraulein HW77 and fraulein Walther LGV. Maybe it’s because it’s much lighter. Brislee recommended the JSB’s and the lightest I have is the Extremes at 9.65 grain. I’ll have to look online for someone that sell the JSB’s. I’m a little disappointed that the accuracy wasn’t there at first but I’m pretty sure it will get better.

How do you guys that own one hold it to shoot I’m experimenting with different holds but no real winner has emerged yet. I know one thing my right hand is starting to hurt from breaking the barrel but I suppose I’ll have to man up. I look forward to hearing your pellets choices and holds.

Yesterday I put through about 300 pellets. The Barracuda Hunter Extremes are the best grouping pellets out of my limited choice atm. The breaking of the barrel yesterday was getting noisy and rough so a smear of gun oil on the indent ball and the end of the cocking arm fixed that. Very easy and comfortable to cock now.

I know one shot groups are not an indicator of accuracy but I thought I’d share these with you. The coke can was at 30 metres, filled with water, clean pass through. The bottle top on the other hand was shot with my LGV at 35 meters, hit first shot, but that was shooting the 9.65 Greens. At the moment very happy with the new addition.

Thanks Christian I’m really getting into this little wonder. Just got back from town and no luck with the JSB’s the local gun shop only sells H&N.

Ive been told that the windmill is 100 years old, it’s a Southern Cross if that means anything to you. I use it to pump water from our creek into our dam, you can never have enough water on hand. It works really well but all the timbers are rotten so it’s a bit unsafe if I need to go up to grease the thing.

Gary, I promised some pics of the .22 Terrus. Here she is, decked out with a TKO moderator doing double duty between the Terrus and my .22 Maximus PCP:

My BogPod DSSS sticks are next to her. Decided to learn field shooting with the Terrus as my instructor.

And here she is in her birthday suit:

Loving me some German Springer shooting!

Very nice Pete. How’s she shooting, I finally found a place in NSW that sells JSB 8.44 grains so I will be ordering some online when I run out of the H&N Extremes. A lot of guys on the forum are recommending them but the Extremes are grouping well so I’ll see how it goes.

Have you found her favourite pellet yet? The Terrus is a very nice rifle, it will definitely be my next 22. Very good power and shoots accurately at longer distances. Let us know how she goes when you stretch the distances.

Spent some time yesterday sighting at 25 yards after installing a droop-compensating rail on top of the dove tail. You can see the additional rail mounted in the pics above. Makes all the difference in the world. Without it my POI was still 2 inches low at 25 yards even as my scope was nearly maxed out in elevation. That's not a bug it's a feature when it comes to German springers, or so I understand from others in the old-timers' community of shooters.

RWS Fields at 14.5 gr do ok, as do Vortex (Hatsan) at 14.39 gr. The revelation came when I tried JSB Exact Heavy 18.13s ... boy does it like those pellets. I was experimenting with my new shooting sticks so there're no pictures of groups worth sharing but I could tell in the scope whether a shot landed where aimed or not. The JSBs will be what I continue to test with in the weeks to come, though I'll use other less costly pellets to settle the gun down.

Pete thanks for that, have you tried to assess the hitting power of your new shooter yet. I was telling Intenseaty22 how impressed I am with this little 6 or 7 foot pound rifle. I put two Barracuda Hunter Extremes into a pine board at 36 metres. The skirts were level with the face of the board. Plenty of oomph for pest birds at that distance.
