HW30s (.22) in the house!

Just received my HW30s in .22. Cleaned the barrel (10 patches with Ballistol) and tightened screws. It has a nice "thump" action and has little recoil.

Using a pell seat:

It clocks between 360-370 fps with 14.3 Crosman Premier domes. Outside temp was 30F

It clocks between 365 to 375 with 15.89 JSB Exact Jumbos. Outside temp was 30F

ARE THESE SPEEDS TYPICAL of a .22 cal HW30s right out of the box????

Too soon to talk about accuracy, but I think this will be perfect for plinking.

BTW - This is a small gun with a short LOP. I can still shoot it comfortably.

14.3gr at 365fps average is only around 4 Foot Pounds. Factory HW30’s shoot around 7FPE. Even at 30 degree temps, I don’t think it reduces power in almost half. How confident are you in the function of your chrono? There’s a Canadian fellah who posted chrono of his HW30 .22 shooting JSB 15.89gr at a temperature of -6C and he was getting 480-490fps (8.3FPE)… his YouTube channel is glenn smith.

Anyhoo, no thanks to your post, I’m a few hundred dollars lighter. Curiosity got the better of me and I looked at AoA’s website to see what I could see about this .22 Urban Pro. I already have a Plain Jane .177 HW30 that used to shoot pellet-on-pellet with 7gr JSB’s. Had a Gehmann iris sight until the gun fell off a caldwell fieldpod tripod onto a hardwood floor. She bounced off the muzzle and summersaulted onto the sight and bent the sight mount. I might’ve cried, who knows? She continued to shoot fine with a scope for a good while. Shots are all over the place now, I suspect that little gun is knocking the scope innards senseless. I tried every different ammo, torqued the screws, ran patches throught the bore, etc. Maybe I just need a backup .22 HW30 until I get the .177 sorted out.

I'm at 6500 ft. The .22 cal Hw30s is advertised "up to 425 fps", so I didn't think mine was that far off with average weight pellets. AOA clocked it at 460 fps with H&N F/T Trophy (14.6) before they shipped it to me. Hmmm...maybe my brand new Caldwell Precision Chrony is more than .25% off. Nope, the crony is fine. I just clocked my Prod at 650 fps. That's about right for the way I have it set up.

Thanks for the suggestions. Keep 'em coming!

That is a great velocity for 6500 ft of elevation!

Is it really? I didn't know elevation would have that much of an effect. I'm about 5000' higher than AOA, so it's possible.

I just looked it up and Gilbert is at 1200'. Ignore my previous post. I was going off a memory of a thread on GTA.

So yes, that might be a more realistic drop off than I thought.

I just ordered one too, they were almost out. I wanted a .22 for the ease of loading pellets with old stiff fingers. Like MJS I also see it as a really accurate Redrider! I’m using open sights, and plan on trying a See all sight that I have, and I’ll try a red dot too. I’m going to try shooting at 15 and 25 yards off hand lol. I really want to improve my off hand shooting, a shooting session off hand at 15 yards from me looks like one shot from a 410 shotgun 😬

That velocity seems very slow for a new hw 30....might want to check your chrono or even send it back to aoa . At that velocity your very limited on what it can do .

I checked the chrono with my Prod and it's right there. PCPs don't suffer from high altitude. It may take more pumps to reach max pressure in a PCP, but they are still performing up to speed. It would be interesting if someone else at high altitude could chime in about springers. Even at these slow speeds, the hw30 will do exactly what I need it to do.

I just chrono'd my old RWS 24 (.177) and it averages 470 fps with 8.3 pellets.

I think my chrono is accurate and my HW30s (.22) is a 370 fps gun at 6500'.
