HW30 S .177 in the house

I recently purchased a HW30 S .177, I did a lot of reading of posts from owners having various models of this gun before my purchase and can't recall reading anything that turned me against it.

My decision to even consider adding another break barrel spring gun to my collection stems from my grandson wanting a Red Ryder, which I will likely purchase for his 10th birthday in a couple months. I feel that will be a good low-cost teaching / learning experience airgun, but I'm also pretty sure he will outgrow that experience in no time at all....enter the HW30 as it's a smaller rifle and he should be able to cock and shoot it without problem. And it will be an airgun that has a reputation lasting for years.

I've been shooting this rifle in my basement due to sub freezing temps outside to break it in somewhat before the inevitable BIG day introducing my grandson to it. I have been using Crosman Destroyer ammo and have found promising accuracy. I added an EFR scope to the gun as my eyesight won't allow the use of open sights. Looking forward to warmer temps and outdoor 25-30yd shooting with JSB and H&N ammo.

Thanks for any advice or experiences with this rifle.

An excellent choice, both the gun and the optics. The more you shoot it the smoother it gets. I've probably put between 2000 to 2500 pellets through mine. No twang, no buzz and extremely consistent. I have found that any of the lighter JSB domes 7.33, 7.87, and 8.44 are very accurate. Because I scoped mine, I removed the front sight and put a muzzle brake on. Just makes cocking a little more comfortable. Enjoy your HW 30. When I just want to have some fun and plink, it is my go to gun.

It's the only gun in my collection that I can emphatically tell you I will not sell. Other guns get trigger time on a rotation of sorts, but my HW30 is always out. Actually working on a video project with it now. Mine shoots the JSBs 8.44, 10.34 and Polymag 8 with insane repeatability.

Any particular reason. Is it just smooth and accurate because its low power? I just got an hw50s I'm enjoying so far as a backyard squirrel gun using open sights. May scope it and take it hunting later

No, not because it is low powered. I can only speak for me, my gun. It's really nice looking gun, pepper laminate and threaded for moderator, no iron sights = very clean lines. It is light weight, small, easy to take around, can be shot by my 7 year old, my 10 year old, my 13 year old, and me (I'm not a big dude at 5'5") no problem at all. Easy to cock, will not tire you, can shoot it all day. So stupid accurate, I keep my shots to no more than 30 yards, but hunt to 20 yards for chipmunks, mice, and squirrels. Birds out to 30, no problem. Yes, smooth too, no big kick, just a nice thud and very quiet. It's the culmination of all these things that make it such a great gun to me.

RWS good choice on the 30. I had one but it was a lemon, all sorts of problems until it broke but when everything was inline it was very accurate and a pleasure to shoot. I returned it and upgraded to a HW50S in 22 cal, so far I can’t fault this rifle, just as accurate as the 30 but more oomph.

One thing I found out is if accuracy starts to wander check your pivot screw, too loose or too tight and accuracy goes out the window. Enjoy your new 30.
