HW 95 and detune or HW 50S instead?

Got the itch for a new high end spring rifle lately. I do plinking and hunting with a tad of target work thrown in.

Mainly use it for squirrels and rabbits so would I be better to get a HW95 and tune it down a bit to around 12 ft/lbs or just go ahead and

get a HW50S? Either one I speak of would be in .177 caliber.

Any tips or ideas on this venture?

Thanks in advance.

Although I’m not real experienced with Springers like some people on here are ,I got to where I didn’t like them until I figured I would give them one more try and buy the HW 50. It is so much nicer to shoot. I bought mine refurbished through pyramid air and I don’t think any work was done to it. It was probably just an open box deal. But It shoots so smoothly and is accurate. Fit and finish is great too. And it’s got enough power for small game also. I would just get a gun that suited your Needs and be done with it rather than buy one more powerful And detune it.I will have to admit though I was a little bit leery of the purchase at first because I read a lot of good reviews on it but there were some people that were saying theirs twanged And had rough cocking Issues. But mine doesn’t have any of those issues. Butter smooth.Don’t have to use the artillery hold either. And also the HW 50 will be a little lighter. And mine is a 17 caliber.

I have both,95 in .20 love it,oh it is also tuned ...the 50 was sort-of-rough at first, had to shoot for months before I liked it...I did that because it has a great trigger and is accurate...so now I like it to......177 HW 50may be better for you,if I had to choose one it would be the 95...I think the 95 is the better springer.

Don't think the 50 won't need a tune,it is not a polished springer, I am going to tune mine because it is still too rough for my likening and worth the effort to get right.,,,,I will properly put a 12#kit in it.

I have the $533.38 OUCH!!! 177 HW50s Hunter edition and like my $534.66 double OUCH!!! Laminate 177 HW30 Urban Hunter better that Seems more accurate to shoot than the HW50s Hunter. My 177 Beeman R9 (HW95) was easier to cock and shoot accurately than my HW50s Hunter.

I prefer my 177 XISICO BAM B26-2 R9/HW95 clone better than the real German R9/HW95. Not necessarily preferring cheaper Chinese over real German but the Chinese one was significantly more accurate and very pellet friendly more so than the real German one (REAL SHOCKER HERE) and the Chinese Rekord trigger felt a hell of a lot lighter once adjusted right in comparison to the real one and I even bought a Genuine HW German Rekord trigger group and an R9 barrel block assembly that I never needed to install and probably wouldn't have been as accurate I must have gotten a real fluke. I bought several used over the years but haven't shot the others on paper only for function and just collected them based on the first one and got rid of my R9s even my Vortek blue laminate edition that wouldn't shoot as accurately as the straight out of the box BAM B26-2. There were 4 (FOUR)177 R9s that weren't as accurate as my first B26-2 so I was done with Beeman R9s and R11/HW98s and only collected the Chinese ones.

If you get the 95 which I suggest you can detune it to a lower power and if later on you decide you wanted to go back up and power so be it it's going to be the same as when you first got it basically period if you get the HW 50 which is supposedly lower power than the 95 then there's no need to detune obviously to get there but if you were to up the power in the 50, in my opinion it would be harsher than a factory 95 I hope that makes sense

I know this isn’t an answer to the question you asked, but FWIW here is my take.

I own both an hw97k (same powerplant as the hw95) and an hw50s, both in .177. All of my full sized spring guns (hw97k and AA Pro Sport) are tuned down to 12fpe because that has been the sweet spot for me in terms of accuracy and quality of shot cycle. My hw50s shot at about 11-12fpe when brand new, depending on the pellet used. I have since tuned that down to 10.5fpe when using the JSB 8.4s.

For plinking and rabbit/squirrel hunting, I will always reach first for the hw50s. 10.5fpe is plenty of power inside of 40 yards for small game hunting and I really appreciate the lighter weight of the hw50s when out in the field. IMHO, both the hw50s and the hw95 come over-powered from the factory.

Both options will serve you sell and good luck choosing.

Went through the same decision process and chose the 50, and had it tuned by John in PA. Gorgeous, accurate rifle, but I wish I had gone with the 95. For me, and others may not have this issue, the 50 stock comb is too low for scope use. I had to add a strap on cheek piece. Would love to own a 95 tuned and set to 8-10 ft pounds; for me that would be the perfect “play” rifle.
