Hunting squirrels deep in the bush...

Was able to join my buddy for the day in our pasture for some ground squirrel hunting. The pasture is overgrown since the ranchers have yet to graze their cattle over it. Opportunities were few and far between as the critters used the concealing grass quite effectively. Edges of the overgrowth were exceedingly close, between 25-35 yards. I haven’t shot that close since last year when we started culling them. Back then it was them that was the overgrowth! They were everywhere, on tree stumps and fallen trees. But we did a lot of hunting and the yardages grew as the heard was thinned. This spring it was 80-140 yards to get shots to them. Now that the spring rains have given the grass for them to hide in, we took what we could get. Only a fraction of what was out there. But shooting close on the 5 or so I could today reminded me of how far I’ve come. And the majority of that progress was made by the good people on this forum. Cheers!

This forum was the number one reason for my increased skill. I had the trigger pull and aiming down from years of shooting, but the ins & outs of getting that pellet to hit where I’m aiming was all here. Now I’m showing my friend who got me into this madness the things I’ve learned here. He’s astounded by the 100 yard one shot hits I’ve been making with regularity. He is still ranging by taking the shot and adjusting for the second. I was too, the main reason I got the semi auto in the first place! Now I’m content with it to take two squirrels next to each other. Funny, my buddy is on another forum and I ask him if this stuff is covered there. Maybe he’s not gleaning from it as hard as I was here.
