Hunting License ?

I was watching a latest video, won't say who,s and in the vid a non-resident person shoots a rabbit. Because? Am I missing something? Now I'm not against hunting, use to hunt myself in my younger days. I'm pretty sure you need a hunting license to shoot most animals in most states. And only during certain times of the year. Extenuating circumstances waive some of those restrictions of course but may still not allow you to shoot them before you have tried alternate non lethal methods of removing or discouraging said animal. I checked the hunting season for rabbits for that state and it's from Sept 1st to Feb 28th ? eh, just seemed like, idk, lacking proper ettiquet or sport. Killing a game animal for the sake of demonstrating the effectiveness of your equipment, a lame excuse cause every1 already knows how effective said gun and ammo are, and out of season, not to high on my list of admired accomplishments really. I don't subscribe to any of those channels, privacy issues lol,so I can't point this out to the person who made the vid. So I worded my thoughts here, sry if it got long written.

I thought the same thing when I saw that video. It sure looks like a game species that in that state is definitely out of season. It is very similar to a speices that is considered a pest and has no limit or season, hopefully it was the latter. I cringed and thought that was one part that they should have left out. Not against hunting but am strongly for legal and responsible hunting. My 2 cents.

Since you checked the laws for that state this really doesnt matter but in MT there are no small game seasons and you dont need a license to shoot most small game. MT lists just about all small game as varmints or non game and they do not have a season or bag limits. Rabbits, hares, tree squirrels, quail, red fox, coyote, skunk, badger, prairie dog, ground squirrels are all non game or varmints with no season or limits so they can be shot 360 days a year. I am betting many people who never hunted or lived in MT might see a video from MT and think allot of poaching was going on when in fact it was all legal hunting/pesting. This doesnt apply to your post since you did check into the laws for that state and I commend you for that cause many times the person may just assume it was illegally taken game due to their local laws. My post is just a reminder to the next reader to check laws before posting if they think someone is poaching because they may not be.

I'm a hunter so I always buy a hunting license to kill animal. I believe shooting any game animals or even pest required an hunting license. But most people you see on YouTube and on here shoot rabbit, pigeon, dove, birds, etc. I doubt they have hunting license. But they shooting on their farm and property. So they can kill any animal they want since no game warden is gonna come on private property. I know some people who shoot deer out of season and with no tag or license cause the deer enter their property.

In Texas I was told you need a hunting licence to shoot anything, Rattlesnake, sparrow, euro doves , If you go out with a sling shot to hunt rattle snakes you need a hunting licence.

Now I was told this by two game wardens that came up to the deer cabin out of season as we were doing repairs to the cabin,

Mike

As Crosman999 has stated. Same in California.

In Texas we need a licence for any game animal taken including trapping. As far as owning the land here we have to have a licence to pest/hunt/trap on our own land. This also includes fishing. This is no problem for most people here the money from licence is used for game remediation etc. We have a severe hog problem they can be shot with a machine gun from out of a helicopter but still gotta have a licence. Our game wardens here are pretty tough but IMO a person should spend the $ for the opportunity to participate in the sport. If you are in a different state shooting/fishing the least a person should do is buy a licence to help that state with their game management. James.

@ jamlet also,, I think you might want to check Page 23 of the 2018-2019 TP&W Outdoor Annual because it directly contradicts your statement!

A license in Texas is not required for coyotes attacking, about to attack or that recently attacked livestock, feral hogs and depredating fur bearing animals on private land!

A new law Just signed recently by the governor for hogs will go into effect September 1 that allows hunting of feral hogs without a license on private land even if the shooter is from out of state!

As far as the video in question Yes infractions DID occur IF there are not depredation laws that allow it since cottontail rabbits are NOT in season at this time in that location. Whether a hunting license was held by the shooter there is no way to tell!

So you seem to be a concerned hunter.Let me ask you this one question.Your friends or the people you know that poach deer did you turn them in ?If you didn’t I wouldn’t worry about the people on here shooting pest .PS I buy a license every year just so you know😂

Yote. #1, I never said I was a concerned hunter. I stated that I ( USE ) to hunt and implied that it was a long time ago. Never said that I have or had have or know or knew friends or people that have poached deer or any other game animal. #2 The animal shot is not a pest in said state but a game animal. #3 Not worried about people shooting pest. But killing game out of season simply because it was a target of opportunity is not ok with me and I presume not ok with alot of other members on this forum including those that hunt and those shooting pest species . Just so you know

But most people you see on YouTube and on here shoot rabbit, pigeon, dove, birds, etc. I doubt they have hunting license.

So you think most of us making videos and posting pics on AGN are law-breakers?

I'm not saying all. But yes I'm saying some if not most do it. I know lots of people who shoot and hunt do not have a hunting license or know the law about hunting. But they do it on their own farm and property. So they don't worry about game warden showing up. I have a cousin who own a house with 10 acres. If deer, turkey, dove, squirrel, rabbit, hogs, any animal that is good eating comes on his property. He will shoot them to eat. Is it poaching? Idk. Since he isn't hunting in fed/state/public land and only on his property. He can claim them as pest and argue they damage his land by pooping or digging holes, bring in diseases to his live stock.
