Hunting in California

 From my understanding it is only legal to shoot varmints, and turkeys with air guns in California .

Is there any discussion with fish and game going on or our lawmakers in regards to the subject. I think airguns is a wonderful way to harvest all types of game .

Also any fellow Californians that hunt turkeys currently with their air rifle? are we supposed to use non-lead pellets to do so now? And if we are shooting varmints it is a non-game animal from my understanding. I think this allows us to bypass that liberal law. Anyone can enlighten me on the subject I would appreciate it

@redrider

I hunt small game with my pcp. It is legal here in CA. We can also take turkeys as well with any game bird. Non lead isn’t a requirement for air rifle as it is not under firearm.

In CA you are allowed to hunt resident small game with an air rifle. You are also allowed to shoot jack rabbits, ground squirrels, English sparrows, and starlings and Eurasian doves. You CAN use lead pellets. Non lead ammo only pertains to firearms, which and air gun is not. Hope this helps

§257. Resident Small Game Defined.

"Resident small game" means the following resident game birds: Chinese spotted doves, Eurasian collared-doves, ringed turtle-doves of the family Columbidae, California quail and varieties thereof, Gambel's or desert quail, mountain quail and varieties thereof, sooty grouse and varieties thereof, ruffed grouse, sage grouse (sage hens), white-tailed ptarmigan, Hungarian partridges, red-legged partridges, including the chukar and other varieties, ring-necked pheasants and varieties, and wild turkeys of the order Galliformes; and the following game mammals: jackrabbits and varying hares (genus Lepus), cottontail rabbits, brush rabbits, pigmy rabbits (genus Sylvilagus), and tree squirrels (genus Sciurus and Tamiasciurus).

"Yes – you need a hunting license to hunt . I think that goes without saying." Some folks are ignorant of the law, thus the post.

"Resident Small Game" = Air gun huntable. And as stated above lead is okay using air guns, (NOT powder burners). I have also verified this via email from a California State Wildlife Supervisor in Sacramento for record.
