Hunting coyotes with an airgun?

Do any of you hunt coyotes with your airgun? What distance is good with a .25 cal 50 FPE? Is the .22cal capable and at what distance? I have a nice .25 cal on order but I wonder if a .22 cal would work. I mostly shoot targets but I have a pack of coyotes that is going unchecked that frequent my property.

I have neighbors in all directions closets is about 1/8 mile the rest are 1/4 mile I feel .22 LR is not safe and I don't feel comfortable using the .22LR. Hunting the coyotes is not my whole motivation for buying the new airgun I like to target shoot and plan to use it for that most of the time. I am setting up a blind to try and shoot the coyotes distance will probably be 50-60 yards. I plan to try and call them in using an electronic call with scent and possibly some sort of bait. I have several areas on my property I can set up so I am not always calling them to the same place.

Thanks for any info you may provide.

Mike

A few websites suggest the following:

Head Shot Domed Pellet
39 FPE

Head Shot Ballistic Tip (Polymag or similar)
30 FPE

Vitals Shot Domed Pellet
52 FPE

Vitals Shot Ballistic Tip (Polymag or similar)
39 FPE

I'm not sure of the accuracy of these numbers but I have seen them in a few places. Sounds like a .25 cal or above would be the way to go.

50 to 60 yards coyote should be fine with a 25 cal. A .22 may be cutting it short a bit. If you are shooting at an incline with the pellet moving downwards the 25 or even a 30 cal wouldn't be a problem. Since you have neighbours at 1/8 mile which is about 220 yards a 30 cal would not be much of a problem since the bullet drops faster given the heavy weight. Whichever gun you decide to get, just make sure it's shrouded. I have the cricket and it's a quiet little thing which can take game at 150 yards. Shot placement is important though at longer distances. 50-60 yards a 25 or. 30 would be good enough.

I prefer head shots, as you will tend to get run offs with shots to the vitals regardless of fpe with a .25. I have killed them with as little as 25 fpe at the point of impact with head shots and had them run off when hit square in the vitals with 30-35fpe at the point of impact. Due to my results on coyotes and other game weighing 20-50lbs, I built a .25 specifically for coyotes. 70fpe at the muzzle and still around 40fpe at 100 yards.

I would want no less than 30fpe but 40fpe is ideal at POI in my mind. So far I have only taken raccoon, groundhog, and feral cats with my 70fpe .25. Out to 65 yards, all the above mentioned stood no chance from a head shot or direct shot to the heart and lungs.

Regarding a .22 for yotes, I have a 48fpe .22 that is a hammer, but I would still stick to 30fpe but preferably more at POI.

What 25 cal do you have that retain 40 FPE at 100 yards? You must be using cast bullets? My 30 cal has 100FPE at the muzzle but drops to about 34 FPE at 100 yards using 50 gr JSB pellets.

"ajshoots"Blackdiesel, I bet the bc is .040 or better? Shoot over 2 chronies to get spot on BC, or use your pellet drop at 50 or 75 yards to get a close estimate. I ran shots at the muzzle and 75 yards over 2 chronies to calculate BC. Then I shot at 75 and estimated by the pellet drop and my actual BC versus estimated was damn close.
When I think about it I should have realized the chairgun info was wrong. In the past I calculated the BC for the 28 gr 22 cal Eun Jin pellet in my Sumatra and it was .047.

I'm having trouble finding any information on how much pellets drop out past 100 yds.. does anybody have any ideas? Shooting Benjamin domes out of stock marauder .25. I'm held down by this cold weather and can't get a chance to get out and shoot like I need to. Any info would be appreciated. Doesn't need to be exact just looking for a rough idea. Would be curious to see where they're at out to 200..
